Supernatural Powers

Updated on May 24, 2013

What is the Supernatural?

Technically from what I understand the term Supernatural is used incorrectly in today's society. The correct term would be Preternatural. Preternatural, which comes from the term "praeter naturam" (beyond nature), is the action which goes beyond the structure of the nature of the material universe. Where as Supernatural would be the action which goes beyond any created nature. This form of activity would belong solely to God. Material nature can bring about surprising things, but it will always be according the the laws of the material cosmos. With that aside I will use the term Supernatural throughout this writing to keep up with the mindset of the day.

Supernatural powers in the Bible

The Bible speaks of Supernatural powers. It calls them spiritual gifts. "Now concerning spiritual gifts, brethren, I would not have you ignorant...there are diversities of gifts, but the same Spirit. The manifestation of the Spirit is given to every man to profit withal. For to one is given by the Spirit the word of wisdom; to another the word of knowledge;to another faith by the same Spirit; to another the gifts of healing by the same Spirit; to another the working of miracles; to another prophecy; to another discerning of spirits; to another divers kinds of tongues; to another the interpretation of tongues...".

What draws us to the Supernatural?

Have you ever wanted to be able to fly without a plane, stop time, move things with your mind, shape-shift into an animal? Of course you have. People have always been enthralled about magic, ever since the beginning of time. They believe in it, are scared of it, or wished it was real.

Historically, people would come from miles and miles away to go to someone who was gifted or magical so that they could become healthy, manipulate the weather so their crops would grow, get a curse removed, or be able to see into the future.

These gifted people were admired and sometimes worshiped for their perceived abilities. On the flip side a lot of these practitioners were feared or hunted down as well. Then there were also different Gods or children of Gods that had special talents or powers. And there were mystical creatures such as dragons and phoenixes.

In the modern world most people do not believe in magic like they used to. But if you were to take a poll and ask a group of people if they wished magic or Super Heroes really existed, then I guarantee you there would be a larger percentage of them that answer yes.

Look at all of the movies and TV shows in the past 10 years. You have great TV shows like Charmed and Supernatural. And there are movies like Harry Potter and Lord of the Rings. You also have other types of movies like the Fantastic Four, Captain America, Iron Man. What do you think draws so many people around the Earth to be fascinated with these Supernatural powers?

Is it because we are so busy in our daily lives that we need to escape? Is it because it is hard-wired into our DNA? Below is a list of Supernatural powers? Which one would you like to have?
