Your words are the key to a victorious life

Updated on July 2, 2011

The bible declares that death and life is in the power of the tongue which means that we can allow ourselves to be affected by negative talk by ourselves or others, or by speaking and listening to positive and faith filled words. Many adults today were affected by negative words spoken against them as a child, such things as you will never be anything, or you are stupid to name a few. These words were believed because they came from a believable source which may have been parents, family or even oneself.

A person will always believe themselves no matter who speaks to the contrary, this is why a person must have a good self image about themselves. Words that are meditated upon and believed create images in the mind and spirit of a person. I use this example to prove to people that our eyes are not just our physical eyeballs, but are also spiritual. Close your physical eyes and repeat the word apple tree; now open your eyes and think for a moment. You did not see the letters "apple tree" but you saw a picture of an apple tree, this was in relation to the eyes of your spirit creating the picture of the word that was spoken which was in this case apple tree. Now can you see the impact that words can have on a person? Jesus said in Mark 11:22 - 26 to have faith in God which actually means to have the God kind of faith.

What is the God kind of Faith? It can be seen in action in Genesis 1 when God created the heavens and the earth with the spoken word. He said let there be and what was spoken became reality. We are made in the image and likeness of God so our words are just as powerful. What we say becomes reality so we must be careful. To continue from what Jesus said in Mark 11, he says have faith in God for verily I say unto you that whosoever shall say unto this mountain be thou removed and be thou cast into the sea and shall not doubt in his heart but shall believe that those things which he saith shall come to pass he shall have whatsoever he saith. Notice how Jesus gives credence to the power of words.

How to combat negative words:

Jesus combated negative words spoken at and against him with positive words from the Word of God. The religious elite of his day always had something negative to throw at him in the form of questions or remarks all aimed to trick and trap him in what he would say in response. Jesus only responded with words of truth and life and in fact he says in John 6:63 that the words that I speak unto you they are spirit and they are life.

Jesus never spoke death and negativity. If words of defeat come saying you cannot do anything right, respond with the word of God by saying I can do all things through Christ which strengthens me. If negative words try to say you are unattractive or ugly, simply combat those words with the word of God by saying you are fearfully and wonderfully made. Satan's main weapon of attack is in the mind by planting thoughts of suggestion through words. He did this with Eve in the book of Genesis by combating what God had already said with his own lies.

Words also create circumstances in life that are not real through what we know as lies. Lies create bondage because a person must try to live up to them which can bring stress and anguish to relationships. Only truth can bring freedom and the word of God also says that you shall know the truth and the truth shall make you free. The truth of Gods word also sets one free from the lies we face in life that try to dominate. Lies that say we will never get out of debt when Philippians 4:19 declares My God shall supply all my need according to his riches in glory by Christ Jesus or Matthew 6 that says not to worry about what we are going to eat drink or put on because our heavenly Father knows what things we have need of.

One of the secrets to Davids victory over the giant Goliath who represents the giant problems we face was his refusal to not allow Goliath to have the last words, but he spoke back combating the negative images that were trying to form in his mind from the words of the giant. Goliath intimidated the army of Israel with words because everyday for 40 days he approached taunting and demanding that Israel would send someone to face him in a fight and the winner would either serve Israel or the Philistines.

There were no challengers after 40 days because they were afraid and figured the giant could back up the words that were coming out of his mouth. David was not afraid because he was the only one who dared talk back to the giant. David won the physical battle because he won the battle with his words of faith in God. Giant problems faced today also talk for example relationship problems boast of divorce, estranged parent-child, etc. while money problems boast of foreclosure debt and other financial issues. Even though it may seem foolish to talk back to objects, we must remember that Jesus spoke to a fig tree and cursed it forever (Mark 11)
