2013/14 Home Kit (Confirmed)

New Kit Released

Liverpool have unveiled their home kit for the 2013/2014 season and are already looking to the future, they have dubbed the launch as #Riseup and there is an optomism that they will once again rise up as a Football club, out of the coffins which they have been dormantly sleeping within the past few years. Club favorites Luis Suarez, Steven Gerrard and new boy Daniel Sturridge head the PR campaign, in a kit which draws inspiration from the kit of 1984 for the sleeves, a year in which Liverpool won their 4th Champions league medal, perhaps as a reminder to bitter rivals Manchester United who remain on 3 Champions league medals.

Tribute is also given to the 96 fans who lost their lives at Hilsborough, which remains a fitting tribute.

Interestingly Luis Suarez heads the campaign, the club will have no doubt have discussed the decision at length, given the recent bad PR which has come from him but have gone ahead and kept him as a spearhead of the advertising, as he remains such a popular and influential character at the club.

Sturridge is now officially a Liverpool Red!

Hardly a shock transfer or a secret one, Sturridge has been surplus to requirements at Chelsea ever since AVB left. Its a great signing for Liverpool, in the sense that they need another forward player to take some of the load of off Luis Suarez and provide cover incase he becomes injured, some fans are however questioning whether he is worth £12,000,000 but when they paid 35 and 20 mil for the likes of Andy Carroll and Downing respectively...

"I've signed to be here for as long as possible. It's a humongous club - for me, one of the biggest in the world - and to have the fans and world-class players we have here is amazing."

Retweeted Gary Lineker (@GaryLineker):

If Daniel Sturridge becomes the player he thinks he is, he could be one hell of a signing for Liverpool.

The Reds draw with Young Boys Bern in the Europa League

Liverpool may well feel disappointed not to get the 3 points, as they squandered the lead on two separate occasions. Jonjo Shelvey opened the scoring, after Joe Cole did well to lay it on a plate taking the ball to the byline following a nice 1-2 with Suso and dinking a cross in, which Shelvey simply couldn't miss.

They were then pegged back at the end of the half by a good goal from Young Boys tank of a No.9 and the teams went in level at the break.

Liverpool played well in the second half and fans would be forgiven in thinking that the introduction of both big guns Steven Gerrard and Luis Suarez, would ensure that they could put the game to bed.

Joe Cole made and an intelligent run into the Young Boys area and was equally intelligently met by a Steven Gerrard Pass and finished cooly.

Joe Cole involved in both goals

ex Chelsea man Joe Cole has not received much love from the Liverpool fans and Managers since making the free transfer from Stamford Bridge to the Kop.

The ex England man had a terrible first few games for the club, failing to score and getting himself sent off and was part of a whole team, which was rapidly crumbling and in freefall down the table.
As with a few players from that squad, Joe Cole took some of the blame and it would be difficult for him to reverse opinions on him.

A successful loan spell in France for French outfit Lille, showed that the ex England Star still had something to offer, terrorising defences along with Eden Hazard.

However since returning to Liverpool, his performances have been once again unconvincing and frustrating, for a player who at the age of 16 was hailed as the next biggest thing in Football, in his days for West Ham.

Tonight vs Young Boys however, may mark the start of his comeback, he played a heavy role in the first goal getting an assist and did well to take the second, getting a much needed goal for his confidence.

Does he deserve to start for Liverpool in the coming weeks?

Draw with "Young Boys" haha. Got to say, the real moment of quality was Suso's pass through to Cole. Looks like a decent player for them. As for Joe Cole, I've always maintained he has the creative spark that Premier League teams crave. I think Liverpool is a good fit for him alongside Gerrard. I can't see him getting into any better teams though.

For older LFC fans (like myself) watching us struggle in the Europa is a bit like torture but we have to be realistic and say this is transition time for the Reds. We have some very good youngsters - the big question is if Brendan Rodgers can keep the classy experienced players at the club for the short term (Reina, Suarez, Gerrard, Johnson,Agger) and have time to blend them all into his passing game philosophy. It's do or die stuff.

Last night we again showed a lack of grit in midfield, taking the lead then backing off and getting deeper and deeper. On several raids through the middle by YB there were no real tackles attempted. Their second goal was a direct cause of no midfielder defending the D area - leaving Carragher and Skrtel desperately attempting a late block,unsighting Reina.

I personally want to see more commitment to attack - let's score 5, concede 4 - especially at Anfield where we're just too nervous. The Europa is a bit of an experimental testing ground for Brendan Rodgers, who likes to put pressure on his players by naming them publicly if they're not performing well! Interesting. So far, Downing has just about kept his LFC shirt, Henderson - well - please can you go back to Sunderland, you're a nice guy but haven't yet shown anything of real quality. Cole is coming back to match fitness and should be an asset for us when the FA Cup starts!!

LFC fans are backing Brendan because he's got the passing spirit and says the right things at the right time.

Ah well. The crucial time will be Jan/Feb when the league positions are more or less set and the FA Cup gets going. The owners FSG will keep Mr Rodgers another season or two if he starts to take us up the league. If not.....?

@ Thomas True! Suso's one-two with Cole was really nice, he did the old 'Playing at Walking pace' thing, just stood still said go on you go and slotted, very nice, he looks a good player for his age.

@ Chef I think your being complimentary of Reina, he really didn't do much good in this game, 5 shots on Target and conceeded 2, compared to 7 on Target from Liverpool.

I think a player of his reputation and supposed calibre should really be saving more shots than that of his opposition, i really think hes been living on reputation and his intial great performances when he first arrived, for a while now..

Liverpool is going through a transformation. it will be difficult, they have lost ground on other clubs and the system in UEFA isnt forgiving when you lose ground

Too expensive at 12 million. English players always overpriced. Talk of him playing in the centre, but I know Rodgers, and he'd want him cutting in from the wing. He'll get his chances in the middle though when Suarez gets suspended or injured.

Ha idd, poor Sturridge, he spent his whole time at Chelsea compaining about having to play out wide and he could have to do it all over again, Suarez through the middle has been really effective, i just wonder if he will put...

Suarez Sturridge Sterling

I'd be surprised if he wasn't on the wing because Rodgers has always used young, pacey wingers (like Dyer/Routledge), and he wanted Walcott too. Sturridge moving is good news for Arsenal fans. Also there is talk that Walcott is about to sign a new contract.

Thanks for this CC. I think Sturridge will take time to slot in, no matter where he plays, but BR is a modern thinking coach who will have a definite plan for his new signing.

BR will play him in a mobile role, moving around the box, going wide, interchanging with Suarez, with the emphasis on goals.

If I'm right Sturridge is a selfish goalscorer who has great talent but who finds criticism hard to deal with. He hasn't yet got the mental strength to deal with this but I hope and believe BR can get the message through. Sturridge is a great penalty box man but sometimes lacks conviction and belief. Having Suarez and Sterling around could be the perfect scenario. Sturridge can play role model for Sterling and Suarez can mastermind moves for the both of them.

Gerrard has already put in a vital comment. No excuses! This should leave Sturridge in no doubt about what's expected of him. Brendan Rodgers is also a man who calls it as it is. He gave Downing and Henderson public criticism and it seems to have worked, though both are still borderline cases in my opinion. If young Sturridge can handle all this and win over the Anfield faithful with hard working skilful performances then who knows what he can achieve.

Exciting times on the horizon for LFC. If they can keep Suarez for another two years (!?) and reach 4th place next season - it'll take a miracle to achieve that this year - then they may overtake Spurs and Arsenal as regular Big Four contenders.

@CCahill

I like S^3 or S cubed for Liverpool

The key is that suarez likes to roam so he invites his partners to roam that is how he and cavani scored so many goals with Diego Forlan. He and Cavani roamed around and because both are excellent positional players, Forlan had a pass every time he touched the ball.

LAvezzi played the role in Napoli for Cavani that Sturridge will have to play for Suarez. Where he can give suarez a rest against lesser opponents and they can play together with Sterling, who is like Hamsik oddly enough but far faster.

Good things for Liverpool and if they keep andy carroll he will add another aspect to their play at times.

@Tom

in some ways, where can walcott go where he gets to play in london in the epl. he cant go to chelsea or tottenham without serious backlash and i dont think he wants that. HE wants to have say in the english national team and playing in london advances that.

@Chef du jour

I dont think sturridge is selfish, i think he plays past his need. CR7 and RVP acts no different than any other striker, but the goal tally results are different. MEssi doesnt count because alot of his goals are higher in probability of going in with Barca's movement and his pace.

Sturridge's timing in my view is off. He takes a shot when he should pass and passes when he should take a shot, once his final ball decision making improves, it will flow like magic

@ Rich S^3 ha certainly has a ring to it

You might be right, pretty flexible players, probably will be a lot of dynamic positional switches during games, could be pretty hard to pick up

Yeah i feel simillar about Sturridge, i think hes quite an instinctual player, sometimes thats good, makes him decisive and then alternatively sometimes its the wrong decisions.

Liverpool will make a second half season run. The funny thing is I think this is why UEFA is considering opening up the champions league. Look at the current top 4. the teams right under them will be all out and each are very hungry for uefa cl play, everton, arsenal, liverpool.

In all earnest, I wouldnt have a problem if they would simply give the europa league to the domestic cup betters.

CCahill profile image

CCahill 3 years ago from England Author

Hmmm

Well, yeah i think the incentive of europe would add prestiege and incentive to the big clubs to take the domestic cups more seriously....

However! i would hate for like the whole top 6 to qualify for the champions league orso, its going further away from the very definition of the cup, the champions league should be... A league of THE CHAMPIONS! so technically only 1 team from each league, maybe even abolish the World club cup thingy and the ECL and have a new World club cup format with 1 from every league in the word progressing, only the pure champions.

2 teams getting into the champions league is already defiling the name and 4 further so but 6 is going too far, how long will it be til everyone NOT in a relegation position is in Europe!

Richard-Murray 3 years ago

@CCahill,

I thinkt he profits from the uefa cl have already made that time come and gone. the people with money will never retract the league.

If UEFA were to do it, then the domestic cups value would rise tremendously. But, the people with money are making way too much for that retraction. On the other hand, I disagree with the naming issue. The copa libertadores does the same thing as the UEFA CL. What if the UEFA CL was given a new name. perhaps the UEFA Continental League. I still feel the problem with the UEFA CL is that its losers drop into the europa league.

IT will never be that deep but you have to realize clubs like liverpool and arsenal want in on the big money. The Italian teams might be begging for it to.

UEFA will never abolish the cl as long as the copa libertadores exist and conmebol will never do that.

but, I think your idea on the extended club world cup is the eventuality one day. with the copa libertadores and uefa cl ending around the same time, it could happen
