Oklahoma City Thunder vs. Houston Rockets, January 2009
not many wins, but great fun to watch
The NBA's Oklahoma City Thunder, the basketball team that moved from Seattle for this season and were previously known as the Seattle Supersonics, are a lot of fun to watch and a must-see event if they have a game while you are in Oklahoma City. Some tickets can be had for as little as $10 (although Tickemaster adds a lot of ridiculous surcharges, somebody needs to put them out of business! Seriously.), and the talent on display is great. Even though they have not won a lot of games this year, Kevin Durant is one of the NBA's leading scorers and he is certainly a rising superstar in the league. Jeff Green and Russell Westbrook are also important core pieces of this soon-to-be playoff team.
The worst thing about attending the games though is the high price of concessions - $6 for a 20-ounce cup of beer? They do sell a pretty nice looking OKC Thunder logo shirt for 12 bucks though, and at each game they have a special price on some other apparently random-chosen souvenir, so it is possible to see a game and have a great time without breaking the bank.
With 5 first-round draft picks in place over the next couple of years and plenty of room under the salary cap, a much-improved and more competitive team under new coach Scott Brooks and a very talented GM in Sam Presti, don't be surprised to see this team in the playoffs in the next year or two.
They lost this game to the Houston Rockets by 2 points but it was a great game. A lot of the photos are of Yao Ming, for my friends in China.
