Updated on February 6, 2018
Larry Rankin profile image

Larry Rankin is a sports analyst with an especially strong penchant for statistical breakdowns.

Installment 2 of our database includes states ranking 6-10 in per capita production of NFL players to meet or exceed a 7 interception season. Each state is accompanied by a table providing detailed statistical breakdowns of each player born from said state to meet or exceed the designated mark.

For those of you interested in an overview of the statistical data, a link to installment 1 can be found in the text box to the right. For those of you interested in another installment to this database, links can be found to your right or at the bottom of this page.

Links to other state ranking databases presented by Larry Rankin can be found by clicking on the Larry Ranking profile in the upper-right hand corner of this page or at the bottom of this page.

6. Texas

Per Capita Score: 325

7 Int Performances: 86

Athletes born in Texas have produced a staggering 86 seven or more interception seasons, by far the most in number of any U.S. state.

Among Texas’s most exceptional are Hall of Famers: Dick “Night Train” Lane, Lester Hayes, Mel Renfro, and Tom Landry (Also a member of the Coaching Hall of Fame). Also of interest on our list is Hall of Famer Sammy Baugh, best known for his prowess at quarterback over the course of his NFL career.

NFL Record: Dick ”Night Train” Lane had 14 interceptions in 1952, an NFL record that still stands today. Also of note, Lane accomplished this feat when seasons were only 12 games long.

NFL Record: Ken Houston’s 4 interceptions returned for TDs in 1971 is tied with two other players for the most by any player in NFL history.

7. Pennsylvania

Per Capita Score: 313

7 Int Performances: 40

Hall of Famers Emlen Tunnell and Jack Butler are just two of the many quality defensive backs to come out of the state of Pennsylvania.

Also of note on our list is Hall of Famer Jack Ham. Because Ham was a linebacker, a position more associated with tackling than interceptions, his 7 interceptions in 1972 puts him in rare company.

Obscure Stat: Emlen Tunnell’s 7 career seasons with 7 or more interceptions is the most of any NFL player. In addition, Tunnell’s 79 career interceptions is second only to Paul Krause’s 81 and Tunnell’s almost 1,300 career yards on interception returns is in the top 5 of all time.

9. Ohio

Per Capita Score: 233

7 Int Performances: 27

Charles Woodson still plays. The 17 year veteran is still picking off passes for the lowly Oakland Raiders. His 58 career interceptions is an elite accomplishment, and his 11 career interceptions returned for TDs is second to only Rod Woodson’s 12.

In addition to Charles Woodson, Ohio’s list is populated by a number of standout players, such as Hall of Famer Dick LeBeau.

Obscure Stat: Stan White’s 8 interceptions in 1975 are tied with one other player for the most ever in a season by a Linebacker.

10. Virginia

Per Capita Score: 230

7 Int Performances: 19

Just making our top 10 in per capita production of DBs with seasons of 7 interceptions or more is Virginia.

The most notable name on Virginia’s list is Darren Sharper. He is one of only a very few players to finish a career with more than 60 interceptions. Sharper’s 1,412 career yards in interception returns is 3rd all-time and his 11 career interception returns for TDs is second only to Rod Woodson.

NFL Record: Darren Sharper’s 376 yards on interception returns in 2009 is the most by any player in NFL history.

Obscure Stat: Though the tackle stat has been kept individually by teams for decades now, it wasn’t an official stat until 2001. The most tackles, officially, by a player finishing a season with 7 interceptions or more was 83, accomplished in 2001 by Kwamie Lassiter.
