Rash Guard Swim Shirts that Fit Husky Boys and Husky Girls

Updated on October 4, 2011

How to Find the Best Rashguard

Sunblock is not enough any more. These days, rash guards are a must for kids, and even plenty of adults are donning rash guards in an effort to better protect their skin from damaging sun exposure.
When buying a rashguard, there are a few qualities that are an absolute must, if you want them to be useful rather than just a fashion piece. (And they can be fashionable!)
Here are some things to look for when buying a rashguard to make sure it is a high quality rashguard that actually will protect you from the sun.

  • UPF 50 or above. Rash guards actually have a form of sunblock in them, and different rash guards provide a different amount of protection. At the very least, make sure you buy a rashguard with UPF over 50. UPF stands for ultraviolet Protection, and is like SPF in sunblocks. A shirt with a UPF 50 allows just 1/50 of the sun’s power to get through the fibers.
  • Thickness of the rash guard fabric. The thicker the rashguard, the higher quality it is, and thus the more sun it blocks. In addition to UPF, thicker materials physically block some sun rays from penetrating as deep. A thin, cheap rashguard might look good, but in fact will block little because the material is too flimsy. Look for a mid-weight or heavy-weight shirt.
  • Dark Colors. Dark colors block the sun’s rays better than do light colors. This may be a consideration as you look for the perfect rash guard, but it may not be the right solution if you are in a very hot climate. Find the color that’s best for you and your environment.
  • Fit. Fit matters. You may feel like you want a baggy or loose rash guard, but rashguards are not supposed to fit like tee-shirts. They should be form-fitting to work properly. Also, they stretch over time, so if you start with a too-big rash guard, it is only going to get bigger.
