2011-12 Final Standings
Key Contendors for 2012-13
We look at the most likely candidates to top the list for the 2012-13 Season
David Silva
The Manchester City man is a great player to watch and simply looks a technically gifted player, plays attractive Football and spots a good pass.
Being brought up in Spain, he has that unmistakeable style, which has dominated recent World Football, the pass and move approach and playing that Killer final ball through even the most congested of defenses, plays and trains regularly with the likes of Xavi and Iniesta, which can only benefit him in the Creativity dpt.
Having essentially won the Assist award for the 2011-12 campaign in the EPL and the EURO 2012 campaign for Spain, he is the most likely to win the Accolade, despite a relatively slow start to his season.
Antonio Valencia
The Manchester United winger got promoted to the famous number 7 shirt this season but isn't always first name on the team sheet, due to his battle for Luis Nani for position but Valencia appears to slowly be winning that battle and should he begin to play every single game, have no doubt that he will be up there in these charts, his low driven cross has become the focal point of the Manchester United attack since his arrival, it is no coincidence that the likes of Paul Scholes in Central Midfield instantly look to play it into Valencia to allow him to beat his man and drill in a cross, one which has become somewhat of a trademark by now.
Eden Hazard
Being a new arrival to the Barclays Premier League, it is impossible to compare his stats within the French League to confidently assess his likelihood to replicate it within the Premier League or not but this exciting and creative Winger is sure to get a few assists in Blue this season, a tricky winger who is very comfortable on the ball, can dribble with the best of them and quite likes to cut inside. It is perhaps his ability to draw the foul from defenders who are unable to match him for pace that will be his greatest weapon in getting assists from the Penalty spot.
Theo Walcott
The Arsenal man is still considered a Right Winger by Arsene Wenger, despite frequent appeals to be played through the centre as a Centre Forwards. However for the meantime he remains on the Right wing and will have to settle for using his pace to beat his man to unselfishly put a ball into the box, as he did so many times for Robin Van Persie last season, always willing to sacrifice himself for the team and frequently opts for the pass/cross opposed to going it himself for the goal, as i'm sure he would actually quite like to do.
Gareth Bale
11 Assists last season make the Welsh Midfielder a contender for the accolade. He likes to switch things up and switch flanks with Aaron Lennon randomly, to throw the opposition. His pace is no secret to anybody anymore but it still allows him to beat his man down the wing and drill in a low cross for the likes of Defoe and Emmanuel Adebayor to finish off.
Wayne Rooney
Strikers are often likely to get a decent amount of Assists, simply for being placed so high up the pitch, therefore whatever passes they make are likely to ones which lead instantly to a goal threat, however Wayne Rooney has dropped into a role probably better described at an Attacking Midfielder Centre or 'In the Hole' and we could see this new deep position, lead to a barrage of assists from the talismanic England man, as he continues to embrace a new avenue to his game, play Scholes-esque balls from deeper than normally accustomed, the arrival of Robin Van Persie may see him turn supplier rather than main man.
Steven Gerrard
The faithful Liverpool man perhaps only doesn't accel in this department due to his teams inability to score frequently, however his passing is still fantastic to watch, renowned for his long diagonals and threaded through balls, he is a constant threat and seems to have added one more weapon to his Arsenal, in the form of a deadly whipped Free kick into the 'Corridor of uncertainly' between the opposition back four and keeper, which seems to cause Opposition teams a lot of trouble, this was recently on show in the Euro 2012 campaign with England, where Gerrard was Englands greatest creative force by far, getting 3 assists, 2 of which whipped deliveries from deep, to the heads of Joleen Lescott and Andy Carrol.
Juan Mata
Another very intelligent Footballer of the same Mould of his fellow Spanish compatriots; Xavi, Iniesta, Silva etc. Has a keen eye for a pass and likes to make darting runs into the box. There seems to be a greater emphasis on goals and assists coming from Midfield positions in the new Chelsea FC setup and Juan Mata has been turning in some impressive performances of late in such a system.
Santi Cazorla
Has been around the Spanish setup for years now but is only kept out by the likes of Xavi, Iniesta, Silva and Mata but shares the same philosophy of Football and has already proven that he has the eye for a pass and is a constant creative outlet. A player with great vision and is very unselfish, expect many assists for Arsenal to come from him this season.
