Acne is so common in our lives so of course there are so many age old myths floating around. Most of these myths are false, and actually have no scientific evidence to back them up. Let's take a look at the top 5 myths surrounding acne.
Eating Chocolate Causes Breakouts
You will be happy to know that this is a myth and it's false. Acne is not caused by the type of food we eat, there is no clinical study that can prove a connection between diet and acne. Other foods along with chocolate have also been blamed for causing acne like pizza, french fries, and dairy products.
Acne is Caused by Bad Hygiene
This is in fact false. Acne comes from far beneath the skins surface and is not caused by surface oil or dirt. Aggressive and excessive skin washing with exfoliators, and scrubs can actually aggravate pre existing acne and make it worse.
Acne is Only a Problem for Teenagers
This is another age old myth that is false. Although acne mainly effects teenagers it's not uncommon to experience acne as an adult. But, as an adult you should only have to deal with the odd occasional breakout.
Nothing Will Get Rid of My Acne I Will Just Have to Let it Run its Course
This myth is also false. The truth is you can clear acne up, it's just a case of finding the right product, or medicine for your skin. You may need to visit a dermatologist if you can't find anything over the counter, but there is acne medication out there to give breakouts the boot.
Sun Can Help Clear Up Acne
This myth is definitely false, and excessive exposure to the sun can cause further damage to your skin. A tan may hide the redness caused by acne, but it doesn't help clear it up.
