How to Go Grey Gracefully

Updated on March 31, 2013

Going grey ?

If you are like me and are growing older and more grey by the day here is my advice on going grey gracefully along with other hair ideas.

Going grey is something we never think about when we are younger. There are various stages I have noticed to go through. One stage is getting your head around the fact that you are, in fact, going grey. At some time or another we all need new hair ideas.

So you found your first grey hair and you flip and immediately pluck it out. You think that will be that. I can tell you it isn't and will only get worse.

Gracefully grey celebrities.

Going grey can affect many middle aged people and celebrities are no different. Like you and I many choose to remain grey, but, others decide to use hair colouring products to disguise the grey. You may see hair ideas by watching what your favourite grey celebrity does with his or her hair.

I would like to say that I base my look on George Clooney, but those who know me will tell you I have failed.

Slowing the process of greying.

Slowing the process is possible depending on a few things. One is dependent on the style and length of your hair. I cut my hair regularly very short. This gives the impression that my hair is just light in colour as opposed to silver as it looks when it is longer.

Another way to halt the grey is to colour your hair. This needs to be done regularly, though, to keep the colour the same all over.

A visit to your favourite supermarket to look at all the hair ideas and products on offer, will tell you what a massive business it is. Proof enough, I would say, that many millions of people need help with hair ideas.

Accept it, you're going grey.

Going grey is all part of the aging process. Some deal with it better than others. Personally, I don't have a problem with going grey, but, some do.

One person who did accept she was grey and never tried to hide the fact was Val, my mother in law. Gracefully grey until her recent passing. And great she looked too.

Someone you know will not accept it and go grey gracefully. My wife is living proof of this and regularly has me colouring her hair. The subject of a previous article which you may find interesting, Because You're Worth It. Hair Colouring Advice That Works tells you how to colour your hair for great results.

Salt and pepper, grey beards and moustache's.

In my case the worst of the grey is in my beard. It was at this point that I really became aware I was rapidly going grey.

Many are suited to the salt and pepper look. You only have to look at Eddie Jordan, pictured right, to see that he is going grey gracefully. Once a dark hired young Irish businessman, Eddie Jordan owned and ran his own F1 motor racing team. Enough to make anybody grey you would think. Consider for a start how much money he must have had to invest. Add to it the stress involved in such a venture and you have a perfect combination for looking aged.

Fashionable grey.

Considered to be fashionable, grey hair, coloured specifically to be grey, is in vogue in 2013. So why is it not acceptable to some when going grey naturally ?

Seemingly it will be a trend where celebrities use it to grab the attention of both fans and Media as the photo of Kelly Osborne shows. I have to admit she does carry the look really well.

Other things to watch out for.

For men there are other accompanying factors to watch out for with regards to personal grooming when past the big 40. Namely bushy grey eye brows, grey ear hair. Not to mention nasal hair. Keeping yourself looking clean and tidy relies on all of these things being kept under control.

There is nothing worse than having a beard and moustache and not being able to see where the moustache finishes and where the nasal hair begins. There has to be a cut off, you know.

Turning grey overnight.

There have been many stories of people turning grey overnight. Whilst this may have some truth, it is more likely to have happened over longer periods of time, rather than simply overnight.

It was, however, reported that Thomas More and Marie Antoinette went grey overnight when facing execution. Well if you were going to go white with fright, this would, I guess, be the time.

Until I actually witness it for myself I will remain sceptical about whether or not this can and does actually happen.

Is there a link with stress and going grey ?

Who knows if this is true ? What I do know is that stress of any sort is not good.

It could be that there is a link particularly with trauma of a mental type which could cause greying to occur.

There are many theories which suggest there could be multiple reasons for our hair turning grey. One quite surprising one is the fact that there could be a link to hypothyroidism. You may remember as a result of my thyroid problem I did, in fact, write an article early on in my Hub Pages career.

True to form you can click on the blue link to read all about it.

Grey and proud.

You know it is estimated that as many as 50% of Caucasian people will be completely grey by the age of 50. Slowly but surely, I am getting there, at the age of 48. Proud to have a distinguished look compared to some ,I don't mind staring the prospect of soon being white, in the face.

There are bigger things in this world to worry about than waste time worrying about the inevitable and going grey. Perhaps you have a different perspective on this?

In summary.

We can see that there seem to be no hard and fast reasons for hair going grey, other than, that is, old age. Some factors add to the reasons for going grey and I believe they revolve around the usual things. Keeping fit and healthy, good diet and exercise. In short nobody knows the ultimate cause and we can all speculate, but will probably never know the one definitive thing which will be the cause. Because of this we might just as well grow old gracefully and not put too much effort into thinking about it.

When you look in the mirror you will see the real you.
