Kate Middleton: Steal Her Style & Find Out What She Always Wears

Updated on August 8, 2011

The Dutchess of Cornwall

She is without a doubt one of the most famous and talked about women at this moment in time. Her fairytale story, which showed her rise from a normal young woman to marrying a Prince, has made us all admire her and ultimately wish we were in her shoes. (Us women anyway.)

With her charming elegance and her oozing femininity, she looks outstanding in whatever she wears. It seems Kate has been a fashion mogul since a young age, when she performed in a college fashion show that saw her wearing a transparent dress, which left little to the imagination.

Her style has of course blossomed since then, and she's now constantly spotted wearing the biggest brands that soon get sold out just hours after she shows them off. Each garment she slips into accentuates her hourglass figure and flatters her complexion. With countless women all over the world wanting to look as beautiful as she does, we must ask ourselves: How can we steal her style?

Classic Headgear

Kate Middleton's style wouldn't be hers without the impressive classic headgear she is known to wear. Modelling a piece of headgear completes a look and gives you the character you wish to promote. Depending on your personality and character, you may choose a subtle piece of headgear or something flamboyant that catches others eyes.

In Kate's case, she has a mix between the two, which is the ideal balance. Her hats and headgear are mixed between an original elegance with underlying beauty and a slightly loud feel, whether it is because of the colour, design or size. To gain the look that Kate is going for you should understand what character you hope to represent. Kate is a friendly and sophisticated young woman with the ability to express herself in what she wears.

There are so many different designs of headgear to choose between that you may be spoilt for choice. But just think, what would Kate go for? Always think back to the character and personality you are putting across through the form of headgear.

How the shape of your face affects what headgear you choose

Everyone is different and so not every hat will suit every face. We all know that there are different shapes of face to bear in mind, and we all match up to a particular type. Here are the face shapes to distinguish between:

· Square

· Round

· Triangular

· Oblong

· Oval

· Diamond

· Heart

Take a look at the image on the right and match up what shape face you have. It's important to understand this because if you simply choose a piece of headgear because you like the look of it, it may be unflattering and make you look, well... stupid. I have a heart shaped face for example, so I'd look for a piece of headgear that rests slightly on the side with a large base and a thin top to the headgear.

Now, there is no sure decision as to what piece of headgear matches what shaped face because there are oh so many choices to choose between. So, it’s best to take a catalogue or magazine and cut some images of hats and headgear out. Take a cut out of your face or the face shapes you possess and match each hat with your face. You can then understand what looks too heavy, too small or simply doesn't suit. Make your decision wisely.

Where to find head gear

It can be quite difficult to find the appropriate headgear that will flatter and give you the Kate Middleton style. Taking a trip to the high street is an option, especially in charity shops. Now I know what you're thinking, why would I look for fashionable headgear in charity shop? Well, you'll be surprised what's in there. You may even pick up some other vintage pieces that will look royal and classy.

Alternatively, visit some big brand stores as you will more than likely spot something necessary here or find a member of staff who can point you in the right direction. This is a desirable idea because if you are unsure about what type of headgear suits you then they can help you, they know their stuff. Otherwise, take a look at the following websites where you can find some sophisticated styles and brilliant bargains.

Clothing: Conservative and Smart

Being a new member of the Royal family means that Kate Middleton is expected to dress accordingly. This means she is to wear outfits that represent her position and class, whilst looking conservative and attractive at the same time.

Often, Kate is seen wearing graceful two-pieces or delicate dresses. These are perfect for all occasions and represent her refined figure. To mimic this style that Kate has, is not as easy as picking out something in a store that you believe resembles what she was snapped wearing in a magazine last week. Oh no. It's a little more complex than that. There are certain things to think about before you choose the first thing off the rail.

Choosing the right outfit for your figure

Kate is reasonably tall and slender. Her figure is petite and she is able to wear many things and pull them off. Each person has a different figure, as they have a different shape face. Choose outfits that fit you (obviously) and do not leave you with little room to breathe.

Kate tends to wear figure-hugging outfits, and this is great, however it should be avoided if your figure is a little fuller. Choose a baggier material that you can hold in place and tighten with a belt or accessory. This does not mean you won’t get Kate's look, it just means you need to make a few adjustments.

How to get Kate's tiny waist

She's very lucky to be blessed with such a miniature waist, but we all know that not everyone is blessed with this. If you choose a two-piece outfit, find one that is tailored and nips in at the waist and just below the bust. Try to get the jacket or blazer to feather out at the neck and hips, but not over exaggerated.

If you are choosing a dress to steal Kate's style with then once again, find one that nips at the waist. This gives a feminine look and feel. If you cannot find this, it is possible to get a blazer or jacket to rest on top of the dress that is tightened at the waist. This is the perfect ensemble for a classy outfit and Kate is seen wearing this type of outfit on more than one occasion.

Skirts

This is a tricky one because there is such an array of skirts to choose from. Kate tends to decide on skirts that rest just above the knee. This shows just enough but does not leave the look too over exposed. Try to choose a bold, block colour for the skirt with a little sheen to it. This can be accompanied with or without tights.

Jackets

To get Kate's style, find a jacket that has buttons up the front, is long sleeved and reaches down to the knee. Jackets that become wider at the bottom are perfect.

Trousers

Kate is a down to earth woman wh0 loves to get into her favourite pair of jeans or trousers. Choose linen trousers that are light and comfortable. When deciding on a pair of jeans, choose a dark denim colour, that is tight and slightly flares at the foot.

Websites to find great clothing

Footwear

Kate has a wide selection of footwear, from wedges to stilettos; she looks great in them all. It's essential when choosing a pair of shoes that they match the colour, tone and style of an outfit. After all, a great pair of shoes makes a great outfit.

Casual shoes

If you are going on a casual get together with friends, then why not wear some knee high boots? These can be purchased with or without heels, whatever you are feeling at the time. Kate has been spotted wearing some great selections of knee high boot when out shopping or going for walks.

Try to choose a pair of boots that are of a desirable material, such as leather or suede. Do not go over the 6-inch heel mark, as this kind of overrides the meaning of 'casual'. Choose something you are comfortable in and that has a deep colour like black, grey or brown. This makes sure they do not take the essence off the outfit you are wearing, but still look great.

Wedges

When Kate Middleton was spotted wearing a pair of wedges when walking with Prince William, they were sold out in almost all retailers in the shortest space of time possible. Wedges are great to wear with all outfits, in particular jeans and skirts.

Choose wedges with a heel of about 4 inches, and ones that either peep at the toe or close in nicely. Nothing too over the top, but be sure to pick a pair with basic decoration and detail. This makes it easier to mix with other outfits.

Stilettos

Okay, here it is. The almighty stiletto. The shoes men are afraid of. Stilettos are a woman’s best friend, and why? Because they are glamorous, give you long and luscious legs as well as being available in almost any colour, style and material you could wish for!

Due to Kate's high profile appearance, her collection of stilettos spans out much further than any other style of shoe she owns. From the gorgeous pearl white stilettos she wore on her phenomenal wedding day, to plain blacks and other variations of colours, you really can't go wrong here.

Be sure to avoid anything too over the top. It's great to have fine attention to detail in the way of lace, basic diamond designs and pearls. However, try not to overload the shoe, keep it as delicate and feminine as possible.

Accessories and Jewellery

Diamonds are a girl’s best friend and handbags are full of secrets, right? These are the essentials any woman needs to complete an outfit. Follow Kate's choice of accessories and jewellery and you will soon be on your way to stealing her style!

Accessories

Handbags

Handbags are vital for a woman to get by. They contain everything we might need on just a short trip to the local store, or further a field! Even if you have nothing to hold, without a handbag an outfit simply is not complete.

Choose a handbag that has a material of leather preferably, this is because it is strong and can withstand wear and tear. The leather can be faux leather or real, whatever your beliefs. Oversized handbags are great and should be carried over the shoulder, or rested between the middle of the arm for an elegant feel.

If you are going for a more dressed up look then choose long strapped small handbags. These are petite and very girly. Attention to detail is better on a small bag rather than a large one. A purse can also be used if you are able to cope without a bag of some sort. Purses are extremely classy and Kate is seen clutching purses from time to time. Choose a colour that works well with your outfit.

Scarfs or shawls

Scarfs and shawls are ideal with all outfits. You can't really go wrong here so long as you decide on the colours that work well with your outfit.

Belts

Belts work with lots of outfits, not just for the image factor but also the comfort and convenience factor. Kate likes to wear belts resting on the waist when she sports a two-piece ensemble. This holds the waist in and tightens your hourglass figure.

With anything else like jeans, trousers or dresses, it is good to wear plain and simple belts with a buckle. They should be positioned on the hips or just above, which really shows off a figure.

Jewellery

Earrings

Do not go overboard with earrings, choose simple studs or if you prefer the chandelier type earrings with a little more detail, try to opt for just one drop on the earring. This makes it simple but not too simple.

Bracelets

These are not always necessary but do make an outfit look great. Kate tends to wear chain type bracelets with simple charms. These are feminine, classy and go with any outfit. If you are not a lover of bracelets, choose a thin band watch.

Rings

Now, we all know what ring we want which is Kate's engagement ring. But we can only dream. Less is more in the situation of rings, so try not to wear more than two. Choose thin bands with or without diamonds. Avoid too many colours, stick to plain and simple.

Necklaces

Every woman loves to wear a new necklace. To steal Kate's style, pick a necklace that has a thin chain, (she tends to wear silver) and that has a minute pendant.
