How to Style Curly Hair
Step 1: Wash your hair
It is important to start with clean hair. I like to use Herbal Essence Totally Twisted shampoo and conditioner, but you can use any of your choice.Since curly hair tends to be more dry, it is good to use a deep conditioner. (I try to deep condition my hair once a week.) I also only wash my hair every other day because shampooing too often will also dry your hair out.
Step 2: Towel Dry your Hair
First wring out your hair gently before getting out of the shower. Then towel dry your hair by scrunching up with the towel. Do not rub your hair because it will cause breakage and frizz. I also do not recommend brushing your hair because it will cause frizz and will disrupt your natural curls.
Step 3: Adding Products
Add product to your hair when it is still damp. You can add gel, mousse or a cream. Scrunch it into your hair. Avoid running your fingers through your hair. I like to use a pump of Moroccan oil that I apply from the ends to about half way up. I avoid adding any product to my roots to prevent it from getting oily. After applying the Moroccan oil I use DevaCurl Light Defining Gel. I like this gel because it defines and holds the curls without leaving my hair crunchy.
Step 4: Blow Drying
You can either choose to blow dry your hair or let your hair air dry. When I blow dry my hair I use a diffuser. This distributes the air so one spot is not getting direct air and it also prevents frizz. The diffuser should snap onto the end of your hair dryer. Section your hair into a small section and put the ends of your hair on the diffuser and put it to your scalp. This should scrunch your hair. I hold it there for a few second and then i move to another section.
Final Step
Once your hair is mostly dry you can add an anti-frizz product if you find your hair needs it. I like to use Living Proof Nourishing Styling Cream. Use a hairspray to tame any fly aways.
Day Two
If you choose to wash your hair every other day like me, you can rejuvenate the curls by lightly spraying them with water and then scrunching your hair. I apply more anti-frizz cream and then hairspray my roots lightly. And you are good to go!
