Thermal Protection For Occasional Hair Straightening

Updated on December 4, 2015

Heat Protect Keratin Spray

Protect Your Hair From Heat Styling Tools

Although I love my curls, occasionally I do want a change. Who doesn't? From time to time, it's nice to try something a little different and go from curly hair to straight hair. This process of temporary curl alteration, however, is frought with dangers since most thermal protectants contain alcohol as their first or second ingredient. Combine large amounts of alcohol with very high levels of heat, and you just might break your hair off or severely damage it, at the very least. As a result, this article will highlight a few products that are relatively alcohol free and that are really good at protecting hair from the high levels of heat that can damage curly, fragile hair.

This Organic Heat Protectant Really Works!

Nubian Heritage Honey & Black Seed Heat Protect Keratin Spray

I was pleasantly surprised by this product when I used it. It has a fresh, sweet scent that is very soft and not at all overpowering. More importantly, though, it offers good thermal protection. It is different from many thermal protectant sprays in that it must be sprayed on clean, wet hair and not dry hair. I found that the product took a little getting used to because of its readiness to become sticky; constant brushing with a denman brush was definitely needed while blow drying my hair when using this product. This should only be expected because of the presence of honey in this heat protectant. However, as long as I thoroughly brushed my hair while drying it, the results were very good. In fact, the final outcome was really amazing! After using the flat iron, i was very impressed; my hair had movement, was very silky and shiny, and was definitely straight, probably because of the keratin that it contains. If you want organic thermal protection that is alcohol free and chemical free, this might be a good product for you to try. It is available at Curlmart and at Amazon for $14.99 for a 5 ounce bottle.

This organic pomade is to die for! It protects and moisturizes at the same time. The ingredients include: Aloe vera hydrosol, shea butter, mango butter, avocado oil, almond oil, macadamia nut oil, rosehip oil, sunflower seed wax, vegetable emulsifiers, essential oils of grapefruit, lemongrass, lavender, geranium, fennel seed, clary sage, phenethyl alcohol, xanthan gum and rice protein. The price is $28.99 plus shipping and handling for a 16 ounce jar, but it really does last a very long time.

Anti-Humidity Pomade

This product is a little heavier than the Nubian Heritage Heat Spray, but it is definitely NOT heavy and doesn't weigh hair down (unless you use too much of it). A small amount is all that's needed on thick, coarse curly natural hair to keep the frizzies away! it can be used to keep your curls frizz free after washing and conditioning your hair with a wash and go, or it can be used before styling hair thermally. Simply wash and condition hair, as usual, and then apply small portions of this pomade to each section of hair. Then air dry, blow dry, or sit under a hooded dryer to speed up drying time. Once your hair is dry, proceed with thermal styling. What I LOVE about this product is the fact that I never see split ends after straightening the hair. This tells me that this product really protects hair from heat damage AND maintains moisture at the same time. This is an OUTSTANDING product. It is available at Just Natural and at Amazon.
