DEMOCRACY - The Most Suitable Type of Government That Allows Us To Freely Exercise Our Rights

Many forms of government are implemented around the world to secure the sovereignty of those nations. From elementary. high school and collegiate levels, students researched and studied the differences between the leading forms of leaderships that can make or break people's disposition of a particular country.

Choose what kind of leading government you want to belong: 1. democracy; 2. communism; 3. socialism; 4. totalitarian; 5. monarchy; 6. oligarchy; 7, federal; 8. republican...and the long list still continue down to the  tribal form of leadership.

Did I enumerated it totally? Which type of government helps you exercise your basic rights as a citizen of your country?

Let us find out which nations are allowing its citizens to continue expressing their rights openly and those nations who are oppresing it.

I'm a 70s baby. The relics of 60s, it's decadence was carried down through the next decades of the 70s. The changes of the governments around the world were overwhelming.

Here in the Philippines, the transformation of our government since the feudal state during the Spanish invasion for more than 300 years (since 1521) were relinquished to the United states of America after they were defeated. Commonwealth form of government (early 1900s) was introduced. The intermission of the puppet government (1943-1945) came during the Japanese occupancy. It was returned again to the Americans and my country became a member of commonwealth of nations in the US.

After passing the torch to the Filipinos, a more daring stunt converted into a dictatorial form of government in 1972 during the Marcos regime. Negative effects followed through a harsh and vindictive oppression of rights, especially in the media. Police brutality were transparent that led to the creation of the communist party of the country.

It was only in 1986 that the most-sought freedom was achieved by the majority of Filipinos through the bloodless revolution, the EDSA People Power 1.

Although, the elusive freedom in the present democratic form of government is often disputed, I think I can now freely express my rights at different levels and aspects, even though some naysayers argued that this is not the kind of government that Filipinos should embrace.

If democratic form of government is not suited to us, islanders, what other option should we adopt?

We don't want a communist form, either. Although, many 'wise' people at the academe openly support its equal existence in the country. They are also collecting 'revolutionary taxes' from the people, especially farmers.

I talk like Greeks. Maybe, because democracy was established during those golden, ancient times of that country in Europe.Like what the Gettysburg address of the slain US president Abraham Lincoln, "It should be the government by the people, to the people and for the people."

Suppressing our basic rights can always mean chaos, from small to large scale of complaints, rallies or even wars.

In a democratic form of government, many confusing factions are always created. Under the same 'umbrella', you can choose many party afiliations that have the embodiment of policies promoting freedom on democracy.

Freedom in its broad spectrum will mean having the right to talk freely, exercise your rights to write what you think, right to form an organization or business...he choice are endless, although at the end of the line, there are rules that we should follow.

Rights can be a privilege, too. The legislative body of the democratic government, through the Senate and Congress will formulate and approve laws and ordinances that will be implemented down to the grassroot level of the society.

As far as I know, even without sources, just a mere observation in the Philippine democratic form of government, the justice system tackle prime or hot cases slowly. Many negative thinkers opine that justice is only for those who can afford the payments for litigations or arraignment of those cases. Many are forgotten into oblivion or many innocent lives were wasted inside jail houses. Many notable criminals are still in hiding or can roam freely, even outside the country. Thanks for the extradition treaty; criminals can be reached by the long arms of the law.

Abuse of authority can be controlled if lawmakers will see to it that they will be punished if found guilty of their crimes, like graft and corruption, massive political killings and other heinous crimes that endanger too much innocent lives.

It's not good for the economy of the Philippines, to be receviing negative advisories from the superpower nations and neighbors, as well in Asia. Although, Filipinos still prefer this system and not the communist party that is also surviving amid the rebellion that plague the country for quite sometime. Since my elementary grades, the highs and lows of communism in the country and the peace talks being offered by the government are still just 'talk on the table'.

The political scenery became part of the 'three-meal talks' of ordinary people, minus the 'snacks' of it.

Every administration has its own good and bad points when implementing their strategies to keep democracy as the pinnacle of our hopes.

Lessons are learned from other countries as well. Economic recession and all that stuff that affect all peoples of the world.

At the end of the day, while finishing this hub...I still prefer to live in a democratic country, like Philippines. I stood my feet on the ground and you can post various comments, even some of it will hurt me or you and others, too.
