How to Use a Fake Webcam

Updated on June 10, 2010

If you've ever wanted to browse around on sites like Chatroulette that require you to have a webcam, you may have wanted to avoid showing your face to the world. But if you aim your webcam at the ceiling or at the ground, people will just skip over or block you. So you're probably wondering if you can find a video on YouTube and broadcast it as if it were your own webcam feed. This works great to conceal your identity or even to play jokes on a friend. It is accomplished by downloading a small program to essentially tricks the computer into thinking you have a webcam installed and that it is broadcasting whatever you tell it to. This also works if you want to broadcast a stationary image instead of a video.

To begin, you will need to download a small program known as Super Webcam. This program is free, and can be downloaded at: http://www.superwebcam.com. Install the program on your computer.

Now, you will need to find a video or image to use as your source. If you already have a video file downloaded, or an image saved, skip this step. If not, you're going to want to find a video that you can use online. I will discuss YouTube since it is the most popular place to find videos. You will need to download a video in an AVI, MPG, MPEG, or MP2 format. Follow this guide to download a video from YouTube and save it to your computer.

Once you have a video file, open Super Webcam. Begin a new source by selecting "Video Source" and then "video file" (or "image file" if it's an image).

Then, choose the downloaded video from the step above. It will start playing inside of Super Webcam. You can change the source to your real webcam if you want, but that kind of defeats the purpose. Now, when you browse to a site like Chatroulette, you will need to make sure you select "Super Webcam" as your camera source. Then, you will see that you are broadcasting the video as if it were a webcam.
