Alexander Unruh, affectionately known as Alex, first saw the light of day on May 7, 2003, at Lankenau Medical Center in Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania. His upbringing was a harmonious blend of academic rigor, athletic excellence, and a profound commitment to serving his community.
Raised in Bryn Mawr, Alex Unruh embarked on his educational odyssey at Gladwyne Elementary School and later progressed to Welsh Valley Middle School. His early education was crucial in shaping his intellectual and athletic pursuits. He showcased exceptional talent in sports, particularly baseball and squash, which became a significant part of his life as he matured. His educational journey included a substantial stint at Westminster School in Simsbury, Connecticut, before he returned to Harriton High School to complete his high school education in March 2022.
Throughout his time at Harriton, he excelled in multiple sports, playing varsity basketball and baseball and leading as captain of the squash team. His leadership extended beyond the sports arenas—he was actively involved in the Ozone Art Club and led the spirit committee. His outstanding abilities in squash earned him national recognition, setting him apart from many of his peers.
From an early age, Alex demonstrated a profound aptitude for sports. His trip to Cuba in eighth grade with his baseball team not only showcased his athletic prowess but also exposed him to a broader cultural experience. His first year at Westminster School saw him earning All-League honors in squash, highlighting his skill and dedication to the sport.
A significant aspect of Alex Unruh's development was his time spent at Camp Kieve in Nobleboro, Maine. This camp, which focuses on leadership and wilderness skills, was instrumental in shaping his personal and leadership qualities. He participated in rigorous activities like hiking Mount Washington and canoeing the Allagash Wilderness Waterway, which deepened his appreciation for nature and adventure.
Currently, Unruh is a full-time student at Ohio State University, where he is majoring in Sports Industry and minoring in Political Science. His academic choices reflect his deep-seated passion for sports and his ambition to significantly impact the sports industry. His collegiate life is marked by his active participation in Greek life, particularly with the Pi Kappa Phi Fraternity, where he became a full member in the spring of 2024. His involvement in intramural sports like basketball underscores his ongoing commitment to athletics and community engagement.
Alex's professional experience is varied and rich. He started working at UPS, where he was involved in warehouse operations. He later served as a cashier and server at Zoe's Kitchen, enhancing his customer service skills. His role as a counselor at Camp Kieve and later as a food runner at Savona restaurant allowed him to refine his interpersonal skills further. He currently works at the Philadelphia Country Club, where he is involved in managing the bag room and occasionally caddying.
Outside of his professional and academic pursuits, Unruh is dedicated to golf, skiing, and weightlifting. He maintains a golf handicap of 6.3, demonstrating his skill and commitment to the sport. He also enjoys skiing at Blue Mountain in the Poconos and stays fit with regular weightlifting sessions.
Community service is a significant aspect of his life. He has volunteered with organizations like Cradles to Crayons and Narberth Food Bank and participated in mission trips with his church, demonstrating his dedication to helping others and enriching his community.
In essence, Alexander Unruh is characterized by his kindness, spontaneity, and dynamic energy, which permeate all areas of his life. These qualities, along with his diverse interests and experiences, define him as a person committed to personal excellence and community service.
