Hello and thank you for visiting my HUB page, I’m Andrea. I have lived in West Palm Beach since I was a year old and love everything about South Florida. I currently work at a veterinary hospital as a continuing education coordinator and event manager. For the last 3 years, I have been fortunate enough to co-facilitate a bi-weekly pet loss support group. I have been so moved by the beautiful relationships I have witnessed with pets and their owners as well as the endless stories of love and devotion, I thought I would write about some of my insights on the bond we share with our pets and the tremendous impact losing a pet can have on our lives.
For many people (hopefully everyone reading this HUB) our pets are family members. We take vacations with our pets, we let them walk down the aisle in our weddings, and have them pose for our annual Christmas card. In 2004, I adopted my first dog and brought home a 6 month old boxer named Jessie. I had no idea when I put that puppy in the back seat of my tiny sports car that my life was about to change dramatically. Little did I know on that drive home from Jupiter to West Palm, that in the near future, I was going to end up trading in my 2 door car in for my first 4 door car, to now… in his senior years, trade again for a car that is lower to the ground, so he can easily jump in and out. We alter/compromise our social lives, and change our daily routines for our pets. In exchange they provide us infinite love and affection as well a relationship that teaches us compassion, patience, and vulnerability.
The human-animal bond is a dynamic relationship and I hope the information in these posts will help those who may be experiencing grief due to the loss of a pet, find comfort in knowing that you are not alone.
