"Don't ask me about being a writer. lf when you wake up in the morning you can think of nothing but writing...then you're a writer."
That famous line bespoken by Whoopi Goldberg in Sister Act 2 has stuck with me ever since I was a teenager. I began writing everything-short stories, poetry, and mock articles when I was a child growing up in Brooklyn, NYC. But when I had got to mid-adolesence, I began to ask myself if I was serious about becoming a doctor when I couldn't see myself in school for another 8 years. My interest in science had not transcended my boredom with school, unfortunately.
Writing had always been there. Writing came easy to me. Someone could just throw a subject out there, and I'd find a way to make it new, fresh, and interesting. A beautiful daughter, some defaulted student loans, very little college credits and a move past the Mason-Dixon line later, I was still a writer-just not one that could be seriously employed anywhere meaningful without a degree.
Gone were the dreams of making The Source, Ebony, Essence or Cosmo's pages sizzle, and now were the days of taking writing odd jobs anywhere I could get it-manuscripts for other people, resumes for other people, business proposals for other people. I had to ask myself, "what are you doing for you, Dionne?"
Well, here it is. Hubpages. It may not be the halls of Cosmo, but it's a start!
