I had no roots. At the age of seven, my solace was a bank above a small brook running close to my house.I used to sit for hours, watching the water flow past, wandering where it came from and where it was going.
I'd sit on a grassy bank, fascinated by the stars and dream of going into space, or watch the clouds and aeroplanes race each other across the skies to somewhere.
At ten, I took a day off school, without permission, to walk to a small pond called "the Lady Bridge" a couple of miles from my house, just for the adventure.
Since then I have always travelled, sometimes physically, mostly in my head. But in 1968 I stepped off the plane at Minneapolis/St Paul airport and was driven to Blair Avenue, St Paul and found a place I wanted to call home.Minnesota. I spent three weeks there with a pen friend who had been everything to me, but through circumstances beyond our control, didn't have a connection at the time. We parted as I returned to the UK.
Thirty six years later, through Google, we met again and I returned to Minnesota. This time to Oakdale, where my love of Minnesota, of the USA was rekindled.Between these two dates I have merely drifted, sometimes abroad more often in the UK.I have met and mostly treated badly, goog women and great children, but always, always has been the desire to set my roots in Minnesota- a desire that grows stronger as each year passes.
Read about my story..my poetry, my mistakes, my triumphs and all things between.
Thank you all who read my writing, the writing of a man hoping to settle down in the USA and hoping to be part, one day, of the soil of Minnesota.
