Joined 6 years ago from Miami

I was born and partly raised in Miami and partly in West Africa. After graduating from college in Tallahassee, Florida, I escaped to Spain and spent a year teaching English to children and adults.

I returned to the States for an MA in creative writing at the University of Texas at Austin. In the spring of 2011 I graduated and was awarded the Fania Kruger Fellowship in Writing and the Michael Adams Thesis Prize in Fiction.

Currently, I am working on a novel (my first). An excerpt, entitled: Spanish Guinea, 1938-1939, won the 2011 Palooka Prize in Fiction and will soon be published in the spring 2012 issue.

In February, 2012, another excerpt entitled "The Butcher's Hands" won 2nd place in the 2012 Austin Chronicle Short Story Contest.

From October 2012-December 2013, I lived and worked in Patagonia, Chile. Much of my experiences can be read about at:

where I am the lead blogger for Conservacion Patagonica, an NGO that creates national parks in Patagonia:

I am also a freelance writer/editor.
