Also follow me on:

I was born and raised in Missouri. I have been writing since my preschool years (my first opus was a hair-raising thriller entitled "The Mad Cow," which I dictated to my mother), and recently completed a novel, Rat Modes. Two more novels are currently in the works, Red Neighborhood, which is near completion, and (the tentatively titled) The Materials of His Face. A third novel, still in gestation, will be called The Young.

Since I read obsessively and can't possibly find enough ears to hear what I think about all those words, the spillover has started to fill up hubs in the "Books and Literature" category. I read omnivorously, but my favorite categories are medieval literature, eighteenth and nineteenth century fiction, modernism, postmodernism, contemporary fiction, genre fiction, and history. I am also an eclectic reader of poetry.

Many of my hubs take the form of reviews of recently published books, but I also reread older books in order to refresh and re-examine my viewpoints. My favorite writers include the Beowulf-poet, Geoffrey Chaucer, the Gawain-poet, Thomas Hoccleve, Jane Austen, Herman Melville, Emily Dickinson, James Joyce, Ernest Hemingway, William Faulkner, Thomas Pynchon, Kurt Vonnegut, Toni Morrison, Annie Proulx, David Foster Wallace, Raymond Chandler, Ian Fleming, Philip K. Dick, Joseph Ellis, Shelby Foote, and John Ferling. Admittedly, I am more than a little top-heavy on males, a deficit I am striving to correct.

I earned BS degrees in mathematics and computer science from Lindenwood University in St. Charles, Missouri, in 1987. I earned my MA in English from the University of Missouri-Columbia in 1990, and finished my Ph.D. in English, also at the University of Missouri-Columbia, in 2008. I currently work as an adjunct professor of English in the metropolitan St. Louis area, and live in the woods southwest of the city with my wife, Colleen.
