I have been aging backwards since I was six years old; when I first saw a three storied highrise building and it might as well have been a skyscraper, when its bright lights despite the distance they stood at, twinkled like Los Angeles city at night, when you are on plane flying at 12,000 feet. Even if I was walking on naked rocks, at dusk, in a remote city called Chelstone, in the heart of a Southern African country back in the late 70s, I saw myself sitting in a beautiful apartment, watching movies on a flat screen television, writing stories at my computer and sipping at a cup of chai latte late in the evening.
I have aged backwards because I have reached out through time, from a life of little to plenty, from deprivation to more than enough. I have aged backwards, from a life of little educational opportunities to being an academic giant, acquiring all the degrees and learning I have desired. I have aged backwards from a country whose universities I could never set foot on, to walking some of the biggest campuses in the United States, visiting libraries with lofty shelves and having access to more books and reading material than I ever thought was possible.
I have aged backwards, because my dreams are coming true everyday, I am more self aware, grasping and running with opportunities, making something of my life when others are getting ready to retire, with the little they realized when I was old and little, lost and resigned to a life of not much.
I am growing my hair, my muscles, my character, my confidence, my sexuality and my boundaries. While they are getting ready to be done with life, I am just beginning.
Meet the born writer who has earned her Bachelor's degree in creative writing, crowned her achievements with a Master of Fine Arts, and is now embracing the life of health, fortitude and attitude with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing. Meet your future Gerontologist, one who is not shy to dream of going for that Doctor of Nursing Practitioner...who seemed to think being a University Professor was admirable but too far fetched, but who now is capable.
