Dr. Kamran Massoumi, MD, is an ophthalmologist and the owner and president of the Oklahoma Eye Institute and the Omni Surgical Center in Lawton, Oklahoma. Born in 1967 in Tehran, Iran, he was raised in a family deeply connected to politics and medicine. His paternal grandfather was a high-ranking politician and military officer, serving as the Minister of Agriculture under the Shah’s regime. On his mother’s side, He is a descendant of Iranian royalty, with his maternal grandfather being three generations removed from the King of Iran. Despite this background, his grandfather’s career in ophthalmology influenced Him to pursue the same path.
His grandfather was a pioneer in Iranian ophthalmology, contributing to the establishment of the country’s first ophthalmology department and leading efforts to combat the trachoma pandemic. Inspired by his grandfather’s work, He knew from an early age that he wanted to dedicate his life to improving vision care.
In 1983, Dr. Massoumi moved to the United States with his mother and younger sister due to the Iran-Iraq War. They settled in Marin County, California, where he adapted to his new life, learning English and adjusting to American culture. He graduated from Marin Catholic High School and then attended the University of California, Berkeley, where he earned a double major in Medical Physics and Middle Eastern Studies. He later earned his medical degree from St. Louis University Medical School, with distinction in research, and completed his ophthalmology residency at Case Western University in Cleveland, Ohio.
After completing his residency, Kamran Massoumi initially planned to return to California. However, a shortage of ophthalmologists in Western Oklahoma led him to join the BVA practice in 2002. His dedication to public service, inspired by his grandfather’s example, motivated him to stay in Oklahoma. Over the years, He introduced state-of-the-art technology, expanded services, and founded the Oklahoma Eye Institute in 2014. The institute brought retinal and plastic surgery specialties to the area, and He continues to offer cataract, glaucoma, and laser treatments to local patients.
He recognized the need for more local surgical facilities, so he opened the Omni Surgical Center in Lawton and an office-based operating room in Elk City, reducing patients' travel burden. His long-term goal is to attract more ophthalmologists to the region, ensuring that Western Oklahoma remains self-sufficient in vision care.
In his personal life, He is married and has two daughters. The family shares a passion for martial arts, with each member holding a black belt in Taekwondo. His youngest daughter holds a second-degree black belt. He also enjoys traveling and has participated in medical mission trips, including one to Vietnam, where he performed eye surgeries to restore vision for those in need.
