Frank Meza, a distinguished Physician in Charge at the East Los Angeles Kaiser and a Partner at the Southern California Permanente Medical Group, became Chief Medical Officer at Altamed. He was deeply committed to improving healthcare for the Latino and Chicano communities. Born and raised in Los Angeles, CA, his life reflected resilience and a strong dedication to his cultural roots. Even before completing medical school, he worked diligently to inspire Latinos to pursue careers in medicine and education. His involvement with organizations like the Hippocrates Circle, the Latino Medical Student Association, and MiMentor helped create opportunities for many Latinos to enter the medical field.
Dr. Meza’s academic path was not without its obstacles. He attended Cathedral High School, where he excelled in academics and athletics, especially running. Although he initially struggled with advanced subjects such as German, Latin, and Chemistry, he was undeterred in his pursuit of becoming a medical doctor. He transferred to Cal State Northridge, where he earned dual Bachelor’s degrees in journalism and public health. His determination paid off when he entered medical school and ultimately achieved his dream.
For nearly five decades, Meza was dedicated to reducing health disparities in underserved communities across California. His advocacy work and leadership contributed significantly to the increased opportunities for Latino physicians. In addition to his role as a physician at Kaiser Hospital, he was an instructor in family medicine at Los Angeles Kaiser Medical Center, shaping the future of healthcare delivery in his community.
Frank was born to immigrant parents and grew up in Los Angeles before moving to Frogtown. His mother worked as a garment worker, and his father, who passed away when he was very young, worked at a Hollywood restaurant. Raised by his mother, he was instilled with the values of education and physical activity, which led to his passion for running. This love for the sport earned him a college scholarship and continued to influence his life.
Meza earned a B.A. and M.A. in Journalism from California State University at Northridge, a Master of Public Health from UCLA, and a Medical Doctor degree from the University of California, Davis. Later, he became a partner at Southern California Permanente Medical Group, where he worked to improve healthcare for underserved communities and increase opportunities for Latinos in the field.
Frank’s lifelong contributions to healthcare and education left an indelible mark. He is survived by his wife, son, and daughter, and his legacy continues to inspire those who follow in his footsteps.
Frank Meza’s work continues to be a powerful reminder of one individual's impact in improving healthcare and education for underserved communities.
