On September 11 2009 I was laid off from my job as a dispatch and dock supervisor at Matheson Fast Freight. Matheson Fast Freight is a LTL (less than a truck load) trucking company. At Matheson I enjoyed being a supervisor because as a supervisor you are always coaching, teaching and motivating people and this is what I am doing now in the Freedom Project. What I did not like was working swing and graveyard shifts. I also did not like working in the cold and very hot weather of Sacramento.
Now that I was out of a job those problems seem trivial and I immediately started searching for a new job. I worked at Matheson for seven years faithfully and I did good work. I have been a supervisor and manager for about 20 years at other companies before I was hired at Matheson Fast Freight. I had the thought in my head that I would work at Matheson until I retired. Obviously that did not happen.
What did happen a month after I was laid off due to lost business revenue and the business was being sold, I became very ill. I was ill with Pott’s Disease. A very painful disease where it takes six months to recover after the doctors’ diagnosis and the doctors realize the pain I had was not just back pain.
During this time I had time to reflect and take inventory of my situation. What I saw was I was not happy working for others just to be let go from their job. I said their job because if it was my job I would have never laid myself off. I also realized my pension plan would never carry me into retirement. I would always have to work. I also saw my children had grown. I had missed most of their lives because I worked so much. But what was more incredible to me was that I have been making the about the same amount of money ($50,000 a year) since 1987. That is 22 years where I lost money due to inflation even though I received raises during this time. Mr. Matheson, on the other hand, had nice yacht, a ranch, nice cars and trucks. He took fabulous vacations. He was always dressed nice. His kids went to the best schools and had the best of everything. I saw my kids very little and we struggled to have decent birthdays and Christmases.
I knew something had to change. I was not getting any younger and the economy is making it very tough for me to find a job. Well I was searching the internet for jobs when I saw an ad asking if I wanted to get out of debt. This appealed to me and like you, I watched the movie and filled out the submission form. I cannot tell how long it took for Peggy and Rose from the Freedom Project to contact me because I was tired of answering the phone because of bill collectors. Well this one day I answered the phone and it was a kind woman that asked me if I wanted to hear more about the Freedom Project. I was so happy to listen to Peggy and I could see how I could have my own business doing what I like; coaching, teaching, and motivating. I could see how I could make enough money to have my kids around me more, have better birthdays and Christmases, and develop a retirement income. I did not have to take a leap of faith nor did I have to come up with a huge investment because Peggy took me through the three classrooms for free and answered all my questions. I was able to evaluate the business and ask questions with no cost to me. I also understood I would never have to do any direct sales which I would never do any way. So I said yes to become a program guide. Now I would like to give you the same opportunity I was afforded. I would like to give you the chance to evaluate this business for free.
