Chigozie C. Udemezue (Gozie) is a Lawyer, and a human rights activist/advocate with a Bachelors of Law Degree from the Nigerian Law School. She holds a Certificate on International Human Rights from the International Institute of Human Rights, Strasbourg, France. She is a grantee/alumna of the US Department of State International Visitors Leadership Program (IVLP) on Grassroots Activism, a position attained through her nomination to the program by the Public Affairs Section of the US Consulate, Lagos Nigeria.
Gozie undertook an online course with the Earth Rights Institute, California USA on UN Habitat Global Land Tool Network; Land Value/Tax Capital Program and is currently a student of Queen Mary College, University of London where she is studying for an LLM Degree in Human Rights Law.
As her own way of giving back to her community, Gozie runs a private Trust Fund and a Foundation, The Healing Hearts Widows Foundation, for widows and their girl-children in difficult situations. Through this Foundation, she has provided free medical aid to about 1245 widows since 2007, in addition to supporting young girls in their quest for education and attaining leadership skills. The foundation also provides free services and support to girl-victims of trafficking and rape; such support includes temporary shelter, free legal aid, financial support, counseling, and mentoring. She runs major conferences for widows in her city and as well as rural communities in Enugu and Anambra States.
She also has featured on several radio shows, the most incisive and interesting one being on disinheritance of widows and its economic implications for the future. In recognition of her selfless contribution to the empowerment and development of women, girls and the community in general, Gozie has been the recipient of several community service awards such as Patron of her State’s civil society coalition forum which has placed her in advisory role to the group as well as a community service award from the women in her community.
Gozie has received community service awards from organizations and her husband’s community in recognition of her selfless contribution to the empowerment and development of women and girls and the community in general.
