Here’s my story in a nutshell. I went to college on the 25 year plan. I started out majoring in Party which earned me a 1.6 GPA. I dropped out, got married, had kids, worked a variety of go nowhere jobs, etc.
I followed a dream I had always had to be a potter. I took a few lessons, bought myself an old potters wheel and practiced, practiced, practiced. I got to the point where I had to start selling as the basement was filling up fast. I derived a great deal of pleasure from this endeavor, but not much money although I won awards and sold everything I made. I eventually went back to college and with a much more mature attitude earned my BA in history – another passion. Almost immediately upon graduation my ex announced he wanted a divorce and was leaving in two weeks – not really a surprise.
This necessitated me finding a “real job,” one with regular pay and benefits. It took me nearly a year during which I did a variety of things, in addition to making and selling pottery, to keep a roof over my head and food on the table for myself and my daughter. (daughter was still in high school, son was in college) I delivered telephone books, did yard work for others for pay as opposed to the yard work I did for myself without pay! I wrote abstracts for a women’s studies abstract journal and I worked as a research assistant for a favorite professor.
After working as a fund raiser at a few places for a few years, I took some time to rethink this path. I learned more about myself and what would be a good fit for me. I have been working in higher education administration for the past ten years and am very happy in this environment.
I live a mid-sized city that offers a wonderful cultural life, a divers climate, and a good quality of life.
Thanks for visiting me here and I hope you enjoy reading my hubs and learn a little bit from them as well.
