My name is Lee and although I am new to this space here at HubPages, I've been around awhile doing many types of things. Most recently, I have been writing. This is something that I have grown to love since I began writing 5 years ago. I was in college for theatre and cinematography when I began the creative works of writing.
I received an assignment to write a short film script. I had never really written up to that point but there was something about the process and the creativity that came out. I didn't know I had that type of creativity and explored it further.
Eventually, I had written enough and received enough good feedback from my peers that I decided to do more of it. Currently, I am working on a novel, which is an adaptation from a full length movie script that I have also written.
Previous to writing, I have spent a good part of 20 years working in the engineering and design field. I was very good at what I did over those 20-some years but I eventually knew that it wasn't a great fit for me. There were aspects of it that i thoroughly enjoyed but as an over-all package career made for me, it was not.
I’m a creative person and love all aspects of creation and a 9-5 office and cubicle job never sat well with me. I stuck with engineering as long as I did because the money was always good, but the end of the day satisfaction needed to be more and I knew it. Throughout the years, I would joke around and say, “I don’t play well in other people sandbox’s”.
So, having built my first home myself, I quit the engineering field and decided to open a remodelling and design company and finally work for myself. This is where I got the taste of working for myself. It was a freeing and at times a very stressful experience as running a construction company was not alway an easy task. The experience, as I look back on it, was one that I’m glad I had because I learned more about myself.
Someone once said, “You sometimes learn what you want in life by first learning what it is that you don’t want”. That statement, for me, became very true with the construction business and in life itself. I eventually learn many things from learning what in life I didn’t want.
The journeys of my life, both long and short experiences made me who I am today and created within me a drive to never give up. Please don’t get me wrong, I still fight certain areas of life, but in the end, the things that I love the most and that are right for me, are always the things that I turn back to.
This is why, writing, for this guy, is one of the most rewarding and challenging things I’ve done so far. It pushes me to force more from who I am. It draws from me, all those experiences that I’ve had, both good and bad, and with each new peice I write, I grow and become more relatable in my writing, making me able to write about just about anything. That is why writing is becoming so rewarding.
