Joined 10 years ago from Ithaca, NY
I was born into a blue collar family in northwestern Ohio right after WWII; I am a true baby boomer. I survived public school, went to college, then the Army, then grad school. Eventually, I earned a Ph.D. and became a professor at Cornell University, where I "worked" for almost 30 years. I received degrees from Ohio State and Oregon State, and my first job was at Oklahoma State. I claim to be the only wildlife biologist ever to be at all three OSUs, yet I hate football. Go figure.
During my academic career, I taught courses in Field Biology, Ornithology, Wildlife Management, and Conservation Biology. I conducted research on birds and mammals in New York, Idaho, Arizona, Washington, and Costa Rica. My dabbling in Ecoagriculture took me to Kenya, Uganda, Madagascar, Egypt, and France. It was all stimulating, and I got more than I gave.
I've been married for 41 years, to six different women. Just kidding Robin. We have three adult children, one pupal grandchild (teenager), and three larval grandchildren.
In November 2008, I retired to our 12-acre property in the Finger Lakes region of upstate NY where Robin and I live with our black lab Zeus. I have spent my whole life learning about plants and animals, and teaching and doing research about their ecology. I am a natural historian to the core. However, I am also a stock trader, a cigar smoker, a scotch sipper, and an avid gardener. These hubs contain the intellectual inquiries, the mental musings, and the awkward adventures of a guy who thinks that life is pretty interesting and extremely humorous. Let's have some fun.
My hub on the Amalfi Coast (http://hubpages.com/hub/The-coast-Amalfi-Italy) won the HubNuggets award for the "Travel and Places" category in March 2010. Thanks to all who voted.
And, read more about my new book "Life at DrTom's: Mostly Humorous Anecdotes by a Mostly Retired Cornell Professor" at http://www.lifeatdrtoms.com.
