I am an entomologist by profession. My interest on bees started fifteen years ago in 1994. My job chart mainly consist of teaching the science of bee keeping to students, doing research on bees and bee related subjects and carrying out bee keeping extension activities for the benefits of farmers and bee keepers in Tamil Nadu Agriculture University (TANU) , a leading Agricultural university in India.
I got my advanced FAO funded training on Honey bee improvement at Laboratory of Apiculture and Social Insects (LASI) in the University of Sheffield, Sheffield UK in 1998 under the guidance of Dr.Francis Ratnieks. At that time I also studied the useful courses in Bee keeping in Rural Development (BIRD) offered by Dr. Nicola Bradbear of bees for development at Cardiff, Wales UK. During that period I had the opportunity to visit National Bee unit York, the Bee department of IACR- Rothamstead and interacted with reputed bee scientists Dr. Bearnda V. Ball, Dr. Medwin Bew and Dr. Ingrid.
Williams Mr.Clive de Bruyn, a bee keeping lecturer was kind enough to take me along with him during his lecture tour which gave me an over view of bee related activities carried out at UK. During my stay at UK, I meet renowned stingless bee expert Dr. Sommeiger of Netherlands who introduced me to the fascinating field of Meliponiculture. The research interest initiated by him on stingless bees is still sustained over a decade through basic and applied research. I attended an international training course on Modern apiculture management with special emphasis on bee products and bee pollination held at Shefayim, Israel in 2005 by MASHAV. Our work on stingless bees and extension apiculture was presented by me in VIII IBRA International Conference held at Sau Paulo, Brazil in 2004 which gave me opportunity to develop contacts with IBRA Director Dr.Richard Jones who helped our bee research with valuable bee book gifts. Winnock of USA came forward to support our bee keeping extension activities through Farmer to Framer Training on bee keeping. Dr. Wyat Mangum, leading US bee scientist and column writer in American Bee Journal shared his valuable bee keeping expertise thrice with our bee keepers and brought our bee keeping extension activities to lime light. Dedicated bee keepers work with us as volunteers to spread the message of bee keeping across the state.
I am coordinating bee related activities in TNAU since 1994. Best extension worker award was given to me recognizing my work on apiculture extension in 2002 by TNAU. We have organized several bee keeping trainings to various groups of people including prisoners. I am willing to share with the rest of the world my bee keeping experiences and rare facts about bees through the Hub Pages. My current interest is on the conservation of bees and developing viable techniques for stingless beekeeping in Inida.
