Obese to Iron Man in 3 years
Faith is not something that we can see, but the experiences and real-life stories found in Running With Faith: How my Faith kept me in Marathons, Triathlons, and The Ironman is proof that miraculous events happen. In 2006, author Michael Bacigalupi was considered extremely obese and no longer recognized the person that he had become. So, he stopped making excuses, started eating healthy and got to the gym. Deciding that wasn’t enough, Michael took it a few steps further – he became an Iron Man. On April 5, 2009, he completed the most grueling of triathlons – The Ironman. Michael runs for the “real heroes” the patients of St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital. Running With Faith depicts his training schedule and his faith that has pushed him beyond his comfort zone.
“I wrote Running With Faith to help those struggling with their weight or their faith, and to inspire others with my journey,” shared author Michael Bacigalupi. Before every marathon or triathlon he say a simple, yet meaningful prayer, “God I put this in your hands, I can not do this with out you. It is bigger than me. Again, I put this in your hands.” And he means every word.
Michael Bacigalupi describes the last few miles of a marathon as, “Some of the worst pain you’ll ever feel. Your aching, sweating, weather-beaten body is depleted of glycogen and screaming at you to stop moving immediately.”So, why does he continue to compete in marathons and triathlons? It’s his faith in God that keeps him going. In Running With Faith, he admits that, “I struggle with my faith, but my faith has been the reason that I have gotten this far.” The children at St. Jude’s and the athletes, with the odds against them, continue to inspire Michael. He shares many personal stories of these miraculous individuals in Running With Faith.
Michael describes tri-athletes as, “baby boomers on a mission, tri-athletes, weekend warriors, breast cancer survivors, reformed drinkers, health fanatics, people having a midlife crisis, people getting divorces, people who have found God.” Hereflects upon the last 3 years of his journey in Running With Faith, sharing his training regiments, real-life experiences, and the “humble beginnings” of triathlons.
