My working life, my family life and all that has shaped each of us stems from my parents’ decision to leave Minnesota and move to Mexico City in 1960. My sister and I (two freckle-faced little redheads amongst a sea of brown) grew up in what was then a spectacularly beautiful city of about three million. The sixties and seventies were turbulent times in many countries, Mexico included, and I took full advantage of the confusion to pursue my own agenda, which was to do whatever I felt like doing, whenever I felt like doing it, and very little else. Freedom is intoxicating and the large sprawling city was remarkably safe in those days so I was always quick to skip school and hit the streets. I learned a lot, but very little of it in school (perhaps more my fault than the school’s) and this was a pattern I happily continued during my checkered college career. Once again I managed to sidestep classroom learning, instead bouncing from college to college picking up what I needed to know as I went along. I ended up with a degree in journalism, by default really, it was the major that allowed for the highest number of electives and this was long before I discovered that I actually do have a passion for writing and reporting.
The result of this period of wandering was a tolerance for chaos and ease with inconformity, so it certainly didn’t take me long to opt out of the school system when it came time to make that choice for my own children. They’re grown now, all four are happy, well-adjusted, accomplished young women - a testament to the abundant possibilities of growing without schooling. Over the years, being free of the constraints of school curricula and calendar, we were able to create our own path and I have no doubt our wide-ranging interests come from the freedom we’ve had to indulge them. I hope our story encourages others to explore all of the alternatives in education.
