Deborah L. Osae-Oppong is a freelance science writer and editor based out of Chicago, IL. She has written for a number of institutions, including Scripps Institution of Oceanography at UC San Diego, The Shedd Aquarium, and The Field Museum of Natural History in Chicago, IL. She has covered topics ranging from medicine to conservation and evolution.

Deborah grew up in San Diego, CA, and fell in love with the subject of biology in seventh grade, when her class was charged with "designing a baby" by rolling dice to determine characteristics such as sex and eye color.

After pursuing research at Dordt College in Sioux Center, IA, Deborah realized that she wasn't made for research, but rather for the communication of it.

After dabbling in the field of science writing for awhile, she realized that in order to write really well about science, she needed more research experience. So, she set out to complete a Master's degree in Infectious Diseases and Immunology at Loyola University Chicago, with hopes of gaining expertise in the subject matter.

"My dream is to write a book similar to Deborah Blum's 'The Poisoner's Handbook', but about the history of infectious diseases in America," she said.

Her thesis relates to autoimmune diseases, and the instructions given to the immune system that cause these diseases to manifest themselves.
