A resident of Tarpon Springs Florida, Penfield Hondros has been an artist for over 40 years. Growing up primarily in the Mid-West and East Coast, she loved riding and drawing pictures of horses and other animals. She attended undergraduate studies in California State University after exploring two years of liberal arts at Mills College in Oakland, CA.
For three years she worked as an apprentice to the renowned colored porcelain artist Carole Aoki, learning the Japanese colored porcelain arts of Nerikome and Neriagi. While working out of her home studio in Sebastopol California, she exhibited at local galleries in Sonoma County and was part of the founding of a cooperative artist group from Santa Rosa. She rode, owned and boarded horses on her land in Sebastopol, CA and painted them there as well.

Moving to New York to explore the arts scene further, she attended Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, New York, for the Masters program in New Forms Design. It was there that she created video animations of her work and became interested in television and different sculptural and painting techniques. Her film projects were shown in Brooklyn and her three month installation -Hungry Cobra- at the main Pratt campus (a giant snake constructed of tuna and salmon cans) when deconstructed was used to feed the homeless in NY City.
The artist started a family and worked with her family to develop a group of famous puppet characters and create a children's television show (The Castle Critters) which aired weekly on Manhattan neighborhood network TV in New York for three years. Her family group regularly entertained the Sesame Street family of puppeteers at their corporate parties and events. Private parties for Kirstie Alley, Spike Lee and Dustin Hoffman, as well as being the paid entertainment for Showtime At The Apollo Theater were the scene for awhile. There was set painting, murals, puppet-building, casting, ceramics, script-writing and a whole lot of shaking going on! The Japanese equivalent of the Johnny Carson Show TV Nikei did a segment piece filmed at her home studio in Queens, NY with her family. Her individual and family work was internationally broadcast and recognized.
She developed and built characters and sets for a pilot film "Charlie and Chops Clubhouse" which became an after-school video series which was purchased and developed by Sony Corporation in New York. Looking for a slower pace, in 2003, Penfield relocated to the Tampa Bay area where she currently lives on Lake Tarpon. The artist joined The Dunedin Fine Arts Center after meeting and admiring the works of Robert Sutherland and others from their sponsored events. She frequently exhibits her work in the Tampa Bay area and is available for commission work at this time. Please contact the artist for more information or inquiries.
