Philip Skorokhodov is a distinguished academic researcher deeply grounded in history, political science, and international relations. His studies concentrate on World War II and the in-depth analysis of cities such as Moscow and Paris. A fluent speaker of Russian and French, his enthusiasm for teaching has led him to share his knowledge extensively at both high school and college levels.
Born in Albuquerque, New Mexico, he started his education at Manzano Day School and later progressed to Albuquerque Academy, where he excelled, particularly in History and English, earning numerous commendations. His academic journey continued at Swarthmore College in Pennsylvania, where he entered the Honors Program and completed a Bachelor's degree in History, minoring in Political Science. His undergraduate thesis, "Who Won the War? Teaching the Young Generation: The Case of France (1946-2008)," critically examined how French schools have addressed the complexities of World War II history since Liberation.
His third year of college was spent in Paris, France, under the Internships in Francophone Europe program, which expanded his comprehension of French cultural and political landscapes. His scholarly pursuit did not end with his undergraduate studies; he went on to earn a Master of Arts in Social Sciences from the University of Chicago. His thesis, "The Second World War Debates in Russia (2000-2010): Political and Academic Obsession," delved into the enduring historical and political debates in modern Russia, covering topics from Latin American Civilization to Soviet and Contemporary European History.
He then moved to Arizona State University for his PhD in History, focusing his research on "A Tale of Two Cities: Food, Hunger and Rationing in Moscow and Paris during WWII." He achieved ABD status, having completed all the necessary coursework and examinations, yet awaits the defense of his dissertation.
Philip's scholarly endeavors have taken him across the globe, including extensive research in Moscow and Paris. His work primarily analyzed the wartime government rationing policies and their impact on the populations during WWII. He has assisted a professor in Paris and translated significant Russian documents for a project at the University of New Mexico.
As an instructor, Philip has a robust teaching background. He has lectured on Western Civilization and U.S. History at Arizona State University and was an adjunct faculty member at Chandler-Gilbert Community College. His teaching repertoire also includes a stint teaching Russian to K-8 students at the Arizona Academy of Math and Science.
Additionally, while pursuing his graduate studies, he worked part-time at the Albuquerque International Association, contributing to organizing events and international trips that enriched community engagement with global cultures.
Philip is bilingual in English and Russian, fluent in French, and proficient in Spanish. His love for languages has fueled extensive travels throughout Europe, where he explores different cultures, histories, and political environments. Beyond his academic commitments, he enjoys various outdoor activities and cultural pursuits. He spends cherished moments with his beloved corgi, Ryzhik, who provides joy and comfort through all seasons of life.
