Mark Adams is the founder and President of California Receivership Group (CRG), a firm that has pioneered property receivership for over 25 years. Under his leadership, CRG has successfully rehabilitated 415 properties across California, Tennessee, and Texas, handling a total of $62.5 million in rehab loans that have all been repaid. Through these efforts, he has not only improved the conditions of these properties but also contributed to creating approximately 1,500 jobs, strengthening local economies and communities.
At the core of CRG's work is receivership, a legal process that allows courts to take control of distressed properties to address safety and health concerns. Adams and his team have applied this legal tool to properties facing various challenges, from hoarding and hazardous materials to fire damage and abandoned structures. Using receivership, CRG can quickly stabilize properties, initiate cleanup efforts, and rehabilitate them to a safe and habitable condition, often in cases where traditional property management methods have failed.
Adams's commitment to transforming distressed properties extends beyond California. In 2019, he expanded CRG's reach by founding Texas Receivership Group (TxRG) and Tennessee Receivership Group (TRG). Through TxRG, he has secured two appointments in Dallas, while TRG recently completed its 36th property in Memphis. These expansions reflect his dedication to bringing his successful receivership model to other states and helping more communities solve the challenges of abandoned and unsafe properties.
As a thought leader in receivership, Receiver Mark Adams has also been instrumental in shaping policies to support the use of this legal tool. He co-founded the Vacant Property Receivership Consortium (VPRC), a nonprofit organization that advocates for effectively using receivership to revitalize vacant and distressed properties. He has shared his expertise at industry conferences, including the Receivership Roundtable and the Center for Community Progress National Land Bank Network Summit. His presentations have helped raise awareness about the importance of receivership in property management and its potential to transform communities.
Adams’ expertise also played a key role in the aftermath of the 2020 Los Angeles wildfires. In the wake of the fires, he wrote an article for Receivership News, a publication of the California Receivers Forum, where he discussed how receivership could help recover fire-damaged properties. He emphasized the importance of timely action in securing and rehabilitating these properties to prevent further public health and safety hazards. His work in post-disaster recovery continues to demonstrate how receivership can be a vital tool in rebuilding communities after significant events.
Adams' journey into receivership began in 1999 when he became the first court-appointed receiver under California’s Health and Safety Code. His first assignment was to address hazardous conditions at a 66-unit apartment complex. This marked the beginning of his long career as a receiver; since then, he has worked on various projects, including residential, commercial, and industrial properties. His expertise in managing distressed properties has made him one of the most experienced receivers in the industry.
Over the years, Adams has received several awards for his work, including the Distinguished Entrepreneurial Alumnus Award from Loyola Marymount University. His contributions to the receivership industry and his dedication to improving communities have made him a recognized leader in the field.
Mark Adams continues to make a difference through his work at CRG. His leadership in property receivership has had a lasting impact on the communities he serves, and his commitment to revitalizing distressed properties remains at the heart of his mission. With a focus on professional excellence and community service, he is poised to continue transforming neighborhoods and enhancing the quality of life for residents across the country.
