Scott Saffold is a board-certified otolaryngologist, founder, and medical director of Chesapeake Bay ENT, a leading ear, nose, and throat practice located in Southeastern Virginia. Since 2001, he has guided the growth of the Belle Haven-based clinic, transforming it from a single-location practice in a medically underserved rural community into a respected multi-site organization. The practice has gained a reputation for delivering advanced, evidence-based care with a strong emphasis on compassion and respect. In May 2026, he will mark 25 years of service in the state of Virginia.
His leadership approach is centered around patient care and staff development. Dr Scott Saffold has created a culture that supports continuous learning, innovation, and a shared commitment to high-quality care. His guidance has enabled many individuals—ranging from front desk staff to advanced practice providers—to advance within their roles and achieve professional milestones.
Rather than concentrating services in a large facility, Saffold has focused on developing smaller, community-based locations that reflect the specific needs and character of the neighborhoods they serve. This strategy has enhanced relationships with local referring physicians and fostered a more personal and accessible patient experience.
Dr Saffold remains committed to ensuring that all patients, regardless of their insurance status, receive care that is responsive and respectful. He believes in building systems that prioritize long-term patient outcomes and human connection over short-term efficiency. His work reflects a consistent effort to create meaningful, people-centered care models.
He has also been a leader in integrating advanced practice providers, including nurse practitioners and physician assistants, into specialty care settings. Through clear standards for training and oversight, he helped improve access to care while maintaining consistency and safety. He has implemented AI-assisted medical documentation, in-office CT scanning, and diagnostic procedures such as in-office laryngeal biopsies to improve accuracy and convenience for patients.
Dr Scott Saffold contributes to the broader healthcare community as a board member of a regional hospital system. He has played a key role in building partnerships that expand access to care in rural areas. Local media frequently interview him about sinonasal disease and balloon sinus dilation. His academic work includes publications on tumor immunology, selective neck dissection, and reconstructive procedures involving dermal allografts.
Since 2014, Saffold has served as the Medical Director of the Virginia Sinus Center in Virginia Beach. He is a diplomate of the American Board of Otolaryngology and a member of the American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery.
Scott earned a degree in Cell Biology from UC Berkeley in 1990. He completed medical school at Meharry Medical College, where he graduated at the top of his class and was inducted into the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society. His postgraduate training included a General Surgery Internship at the University of New York at Buffalo, a research fellowship at the Cleveland Clinic Foundation, and a residency in otolaryngology at Oregon Health Sciences University. His training covered subspecialties such as otology, pediatric otolaryngology, facial plastic surgery, and head and neck radiology. He chose general otolaryngology to provide a wide range of services to his community.
Dr Saffold is also the sponsor of a scholarship at Meharry Medical College, supporting underrepresented medical students, and earned an MBA from Old Dominion University's Strome College of Business in Norfolk, Virginia.
His academic achievements have been recognized through multiple awards, including honors in pathology, anatomy, hematology, and internal medicine, as well as membership in the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Society and several scholarships for academic performance and service.
Outside of his professional life, Scott Saffold is a devoted father to a son and daughter, a youth football coach, and an endurance athlete who has completed numerous marathons and triathlons, including two half-Ironman competitions. He also enjoys reading in his free time.
