Sean Mannix is a highly experienced law enforcement professional with 36 years of service in public safety. He has held significant leadership roles, including Assistant Chief of Police in Austin and Chief of Police in Cedar Park, Texas. Throughout his career, Sean focused on enhancing policing strategies, advancing officer training programs, and fostering strong community relationships. After retiring in 2020, he continued to serve the public as the Statewide Traffic Incident Management Coordinator for the Texas Department of Transportation.
Born in California as one of five children, Sean was inspired to pursue a career in law enforcement by his father, who was also an officer. Sean felt driven to follow in his father’s footsteps from a young age. At 18, he enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve, where he developed valuable leadership skills and a disciplined work ethic.
Sean earned a Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice from Excelsior College, graduating with honors. He also completed a Master of Arts in Homeland Security from American Military University. He attended various prestigious programs, including the FBI National Academy, the Leadership Command College, and the Senior Management Institute for Police.
After completing his Marine Corps service, Sean began his law enforcement career at the Alameda Police Department in California at age 20, where he quickly gained experience in various patrol tasks. In 1993, he moved to Austin, Texas, and joined the Austin Police Department. Over the next 20 years, Sean advanced through the ranks, eventually becoming Assistant Chief. His leadership in Austin included efforts to reduce crime through the COMPSTAT model, expand community outreach, and collaborate with federal agencies like the FBI and DEA.
In 2013, Sean transitioned to Chief of Police for the Cedar Park Police Department, where he implemented initiatives that focused on community policing and improving officer training. He introduced innovative programs like de-escalation training, body-worn cameras, and a wellness program that received national attention. His leadership made the department one of the most respected in the region, known for its diverse workforce and strong community trust.
Sean’s contributions to law enforcement earned national recognition. Under his leadership, Cedar Park achieved dual accreditation from the Texas Police Chiefs Association and the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies (CALEA). Additionally, the department gained recognition for participating in National Night Out, a nationwide event focused on building community-police relationships.
After retiring in 2020, Retired Chief Sean Mannix remained committed to law enforcement and public safety through his work with Sigma Tactical Wellness and his support for Williamson County Crime Stoppers. Outside of his professional life, Sean enjoys spending time with his wife and four daughters and pursuing hobbies such as aviation, fishing, and reading. He believes in continuous learning and staying engaged with life.
