Sonny Whitelaw

Since I began working as a freelance writer and photographer in 1981, my work has been published in a wide range of international magazines including National Geographic. I’ve written hundreds of articles, newsletters, an online encyclopaedia for the Vanuatu government, several short stories—fiction and non-fiction—and eight novels including five based on MGM’s television series Stargate. I have a BA in Geography and Anthropology, an MA (research) in Creative Writing, a Certificate IV in Training and Assessment (media, journalism, and communications), and a Graduate Diploma in Environmental Management. I’ve developed and run workshops on media and communications, world-building (geography and ecology for writers and game designers), mythology, and writing tie-ins for television.

Okay, so that’s my writing career. But there’s a bit more to my life than writing! I was born in Australia but spent most of my adult life in Vanuatu, where I ran a dive charter company and adventure tourism business for 20 years. These days I live on a small property in the foothills of the Southern Alps in New Zealand's South Island. We run a few sheep, grow our own fruits, vegetables, and nuts, go snowboarding in winter and whitewater rafting and ocean kayaking in summer.

Life is pretty darned good.
