With nearly two decades of professional medical expertise, John B. Adams, DO, FIPP is an American Board of Medical Specialties-certified physician specializing in interventional pain management, as well as a family medicine physician on medical mission trips (in particular, serving as a Christian Medical Advisor in Belize). In addition to his credentials, John prides himself on his professionalism, compassion, confidence, expertise and medical innovation.
His vast academic achievements include Postgraduate Education with a Pain Medicine Fellowship at the Interventional Pain Center, Subspecialty Board Certified in Pain Medicine by the American Board of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, UAB/Selma Family Practice Residency certification by the American Board of Family Medicine and an Osteopathic Rotating Internship with the Palmetto General Hospital in Hialeah Florida.
He earned his D.O. from the Nova-Southeastern University College of Osteopathic Medicine in Fort Lauderdale, and then completed a one-year undergraduate fellowship in osteopathic manipulative medicine. Dr. Adams then graduated with his medical degree, with an internship at Palmetto General Hospital in Hialeah, Florida, followed by residency through the University of Alabama at Birmingham.
He then began practice as a rural family physician, before developing his specialty in musculoskeletal medicine and pain management. After a year’s private fellowship in Birmingham, he successfully completed the board certification exam, and joined Jackson Neurosurgery Clinic in 2005. He continues to serve there in the full time practice of interventional pain management.
Dr. Adams’ clinical focus is treating chronic spine and nerve pain. Interventional pain management options he uses to manage these conditions include epidural steroid injections, percutaneous lysis of adhesions, medial branch (facet) blocks, adiofrequency thermocoagulation neurotomy, cryoneuroablation, joint injections, sympathetic nerve blocks, trigger point injections, spinal cord (dorsal column) stimulation, and ultrasound-guided nerve blocks.
In addition, provocation discography with controlled disc stimulation (CDS) may be used to help diagnose lumbar disc annular tears. Dr. Adams was the first physician in the state to utilize the CDS technology. He was also one of the first physicians in the state to utilize the Neurotherm Simplicity probe technology for relief of the common but difficult to treat problem of sacroiliac joint pain.
Aside from providing patients access to state-of-the-art technology, Dr. Adams emphasizes a multidisciplinary approach to pain management utilizing physical therapy, clinical psychology and judicious use of medications. He is also credentialed to help patients to titrate off of opiates.
Dr. Adams has a wide range of medical experience, also having served as a hospital Chief of Staff, emergency physician, rural family physician and Medical Director for two hospice organizations. Specifically, his previous stops in the state include the Neshoba Family Medical Clinic, Neshoba General Hospital, Airpark Medical Clinic, the Heartfelt Hospice and the Southern Care Hospice. In Alabama, Dr. Adams worked at the Jackson Medical Center and Choctaw Urgent Care facility.
Among numerous honors & awards, he is a Fellow of Interventional Pain Practice (FIPP), a Diplomate with the American Board of Interventional Pain Physicians (ABIPP), a Diplomate with the American Board of Family Medicine (DABFM), an ABIME-Certified Independent Medical Examiner (CIME), Medical School Class VP, and recipient of the University of Georgia Alumni Scholarship and Bicentennial Scholarship.
