57Victoria Negrete’s Efforts in Promoting Hispanic Companies, Education in the U.S.
A native of Mexico City and an immigrant to the U.S., Victoria Negrete’s passion for education and “bi-cultural” studies in both Latin American Sociology and International Relations began at The International University’s campuses in Mexico City and San Diego, California, and now spans more than 25 years. Victoria Negrete, who likes to consider herself a “Hispanic sociologist,” has since been widely recognized as an expert in Latino consumer sociology for more than a quarter of a century.
Victoria Negrete arrived in the U.S. in 1990 and quickly immersed herself in the advertising industry. In 1994, she and her two partners founded The Cartel Group, which under Victoria Negrete’s leadership grew from zero to annual capitalized billings of $100 million in 2003, handling strategic, creative and community outreach assignments for an impressive portfolio of Government and Fortune 500 clients.
Victoria Negrete is committed to sharing her knowledge. “Despite the Census Bureau’s reminder that 1 of every 4 Americans will be Hispanic by the year 2050, there is a dearth of individuals who are bilingual, multicultural and trained to effectively communicate with Hispanics. Furthermore, we are loosing our edge as a world leader in math, science and engineering. If schools are struggling to produce these professionals who are in high demand, then it is my responsibility to help our country to do so,” Victoria Negrete says.
Victoria Negrete has served as a member of President Clinton’s advisory commission on Latin American affairs for over a decade. Victoria Negrete also has a long trajectory of relationships with Academia – from Commencement Speaker at the University of Colorado to speaker on “How to become a Strategic Thinker” at the University of Texas at El Paso. Victoria Negrete also served on the Board of Advisors of Palo Alto College, and currently sits on the Advisory Board at Incarnate Word University in San Antonio. Victoria Negrete has also been a board member of the Latina Leadership Institute for two terms as well as the Small Business Advisory Committee of Frost Bank.
Victoria Negrete has received a number of recognitions and prestigious awards including the Gold Effie Award for Southwestern Bell (now AT&T) and the Silver Effie Award for BankOne. In 2001, Victoria Negrete was featured on Fox Cable News after leading her agency, The Cartel Group, to win the nation’s “Champion of Advertising” recognition for groundbreaking initiatives. Victoria Negrete is also a founding member of the AHAA (The Association of Hispanic Advertising Agencies).
Victoria Negrete has been featured in national magazines, including “Advertising Age,” “AdWeek,” “Latina,” “Hispanic Business,” and “Hispanic” where Victoria Negrete was honored as the recipient of the 9th annual Entrepreneur Award. “It is indeed an honor for “Hispanic” magazine to recognize Victoria Varela Negrete, a woman who arrived to this country with no money in her pocket but a spirit full of dreams,” said Sam Verdeja, publisher and chief executive officer of Hispanic Publishing Associates. “Through her work, Victoria has enlightened, informed and helped Corporate America benefit from the power and relevance of the U.S. Hispanic market.”
Victoria Negrete also volunteers her time supporting wounded U.S. Army soldiers at Brooks Army Medical Center in San Antonio, Texas.
