Biewer Yorkie - Biewer Yorkshire Terrier

Updated on August 18, 2015

Biewer Yorkshire Terrier

While thumbing through, I found an interesting looking puppy that was labeled as a Biewer Yorkshire Terrier. I figured it was another hybrid mix breed dog between a Yorkie and something else, but nevertheless, I had to check it out.

The puppy was actually one of three that was brought in with the mom and dad. The parents were adopted out, but all three pups had severe ringworm, which they were treated for and are now available for adoption.

The story was one thing, but I still had no clue about this 'breed.' I had to do further research, where I found that the Biewer Yorkie is basically a Yorkie with a white body and more patchwork markings. To me, the dog reminded me of a Yorkie and Shih Tzu mix, but that's just not the case.

The Biewer Yorkshire Terrier is a true dog breed that is registered by BBCA, BTCA, CBC, BBCC, BYTNC, ABC, GERMANY, IABCA, RARITIES, NCA, APRI, ACR, BYA, WRV, DRA, ACHC, IDCR.

The breed originated in Germany, when a Yorkie breeder (Gertrud and Werner) had a litter with a piebald yorkie, which is a genetic recessive gene. The breeder decided to name the puppies that had white markings "Biewer Yorkshire Terrier a la Pom Pon," and in 1989, the breed was officially recognized by the Allgemeiner Club der Hundefreunde Deutschland (ACH). Now, the breed is considered a completely separate breed from the Yorkshire Terrier, although there are some hybrid breeders who will breed the Yorkie with the Biewer Yorkie, but this is considered a huge NONO, as one will never achieve a purebred dog by breeding different breeds.

Appearance of Biewer Yorkie

The Biewer Yorkie is similar to a regular Yorkshire Terrier in that it averages about 7 pounds and measures up to about 8.5 inches tall at the shoulders.

This dog breed is different than an average Yorkie, in that instead of coming in tan and blue or tan and black, the Biewer comes in different colors. No, this dog isn't rainbow, but you'll find that they generally have a white, blue-white, or black-white patched body. The head may be white and blue, tan and blue, white and black, or tank and black. Yorkies, generally have tan or brown coloring on their head, legs, and belly, but the Biewer Yorkie will only have a tan or brown color on the head.

These dogs have long straight hair, but you'll find that many keepers will keep a puppy cut, keeping the hair trimmed short.

Health of Biewer Yorkie

This dog breed tends to have a sensitive stomach, but you can control stomach concerns with a good diet of high quality dog food, and limited treats.

The breed still originated from a yorkie, so you may see some of the common illnesses of yorkies.

  • Cataracts
  • Low blood sugar
  • Luxating patella (slipping kneecaps)
  • Skin allergies
  • Trachael collapse (collapsing trachea range from mild to severe)

Temperament of Biewer Yorkie

The Biewers Yorkshire Terrier is small, but they're not solely a lap dog. This dog breed is known to be eager for adventure, energetic, brave, loyal and clever.

Like many small dogs, you'll see a lot of spunk and attitude with this breed, but they are also loyal companions and very affectionate.

Biewers tend to choose one person to attach to, and can become suspicious and aggressive to strangers and anyone who comes near their person.

They are known at being a true yappy dog. They will definitely tell you what they want and when they want it, whether it's food, to go out, play, cuddle, etc. Although, as a small dog they do very well in small homes and apartments, be considerate of your neighbors, especially if you live in an apartment. But, being yappy and very alert, they make great watchdogs to alert you when someone is there; although, they won't do much damage in regards to protection, being so small.

Some Biewer yorkies may become demanding of attention, dependent of their person, jealous of other people and animals, snappy, and even easily frightened.

These dogs are very intelligent and somewhat easy to train. You will need to be very consistent and stern (not mean) when training. Always stop training before your dog gets bored, as once he's reached that point, it will be rather hard to keep training for that session. These guys to best at several short training sessions throughout the day, versus one big one.

Do keep in mind that although you may not have as hard of a time with basic obedience, the breed is hard to house train. Whether it's because they are stubborn or it's just because they're small and have a smaller bladder, Yorkies are hard to house train, sometimes taking up to 2 or 3 years to fully house train a Yorkie.
