Cute small dogs good with kids

Updated on March 19, 2012

Cute small dogs

Cute small dogs may appear cuddly and adorable but not all small dogs are good with kids. You really need to choose your dog with care to ensure that the dog you choose fits into your family routines, the temperaments of people, especially children in the home. You also need to consider the amount of time that you can afford to devote to your pet. Parents need to take into account that young children may not really be capable of taking care of their pet and may need help and supervision. Having a pet would also mean that you need to spend time for walks, grooming and brushing. Some of the smaller breeds of dogs need as much attention as a child and could become sad, lonely and troublesome when left alone. It would also help to be aware if the dog sheds, keeping in mind the allergies, the age and health of your children before you make your decision on what kind of dog to buy. Going by looks alone may be disastrous.

Maltese or the “Canis meliteus” as they are known is not only a cute small dog, but it is also cuddly with a wonderful temperament. Give it love and attention and you will receive it in kind. These cute small dogs have beautiful silky coat but shed very little since they do not have an undercoat. Maltese are good for kids and people with allergies. Their long fur requires you to brush and groom them regularly. They also tend to have water eyes and need to be cleaned regularly to avoid staining. The Maltese is a well mannered small dog and is actually quite sturdy and secure. One health problem with these dogs is that they are prone to dental problems. Maltese also have a sharp bark and tend to get noisy if not trained properly. Sadly the Maltese are also known to be the most dumped dogs in Korea and Australia, because of their noise.

Shih Tzu is an excellent family dog and gets along well with adults and children. The Shih Tzu requires more care than other small breeds as their long silky hair tends to get tangled and dirty. They shed very little and make a great pet for people with allergies. Boston Terriers - the kid friendly dogs

These are originally from Boston and make pleasant companions. These little spunky terriers are happy apartment dwellers. Regular walk and activity in the park can keep them in good shape. These friendly creatures are easy to train and good learners. Boston terriers are possessive and do not like to be left out of any activity. One problem with the Boston Terriers is that they are very noisy and get snappy with children when troubled. Though these are common problems with small dogs, good training could take care of both these problems. Boston Terriers are very prone to heat strokes and should be monitored carefully when they play outdoors. These dogs do not shed too much and are easy to groom and easy to keep in small living spaces.

Pugs - small breed dogs

Pugs are supposed to have originated in China around 400 BC. Some people consider them to be smaller breeds of the bull dogs or the French Mastiff. Pugs are great apartment dogs but need a bit of exercise. They tend to put on weight, become obese and develop health problems. They are very sensitive and get very upset and hurt. They need to be spoken to kindly. Pugs need moderate climates. They quickly catch colds in cold weather and can die in very hot weather. Air conditioning is recommended for this breed of dogs. The pugs also have a flat muzzle and could get a whole lot of food and stuff into their noses which need regular cleaning. Pugs are gentle with children and are ready to play at any time of day. Pugs take well to training. They have a smooth, soft coat and come in black, apricot, fawn and silver colours.

Though the idea of having a small dog may seem appealing, it does mean a lot of responsibility. Bringing home a dog is like bringing home energy and happiness. A word of caution if you expect your children to take care of their pets completely, you could be in for a surprise. After their initial curiosity is over, some children may not show much interest in their pets, be prepared to take over the responsibility. It is a wonderful idea to have a pet to train your child in being responsible and caring for another. If you are ready for this go ahead and have your pick of some of the cute small dogs that are good with children.
