Doggone Quotes

Updated on May 30, 2013

He's Just My Dog

In loving memory of all our dogs that are now in dog heaven: Lovely, Silver, Vanilla. Winter, Bosley, Prince, Atlas, Valentine, Sandra Dee, Azabache, Oprah, etc etc

Gene Hill said: He is my other eyes that can see above the clouds; my other ears that hear above the winds. He is the part of me that can reach out into the sea. He has told me a thousand times over that I am his reason for being; by the way he rests against my leg; by the way he thumps his tail at my smallest smile; by the way he shows his hurt when I leave without taking him. (I think it makes him sick with worry when he is not along to care for me.) When I am wrong, he is delighted to forgive. When I am angry, he clowns to make me smile. When I am happy, he is joy unbounded. When I am a fool, he ignores it. When I succeed, he brags. Without him, I am only another man. With him, I am all-powerful. He is loyalty itself. He has taught me the meaning of devotion. With him, I know a secret comfort and a private peace. He has brought me understanding where before I was ignorant. His head on my knee can heal my human hurts. His presence by my side is protection against my fears of dark and unknown things. He has promised to wait for me... whenever... wherever - in case I need him. And I expect I will - as I always have. He is just my dog."

Yesterday I was a dog. Today I'm a dog. Tomorrow I'll probably still be a dog. Sigh! There's so little hope for advancement." - Snoopy

"I once decided not to date a guy because he wasn't excited to meet my dog. I mean, this was like not wanting to meet my mother." - Bonnie Schacter, Founder of the Single Pet Owner's Society Singles Group.

"If your dog doesn't like someone you probably shouldn't either."-Anon

"The more people I meet the more I like my dog."-Anon

I think some of these sayings are are so profound, i can imagine my dogs in heaven 'guffawing' so much. You have to love dogs and have grown up with them to know what i mean. This hub is dedicated to my brother Vic and his friends who every week, drive some hour and a half, to get together to let their pet Jack Russels roam and run in a farm. I just think it's wonderful.

I come from a family of dog lovers. Our mom and dad raised us with dogs to play with. I remember our very first pet was a German Shepherd that scared the hell out of our neighbors. We loved naming our dogs, and we would pick names of famous people, heroes, celebrities, the weather and whimsical ones, like "Blizzard", Sputnic, and Vanilla.

At one time, my husband and i had twenty one of various breeds from Dalmatians, Basset Hound, Weinmaraner, Dachshund, Labradors and Japanese Spitz's. It all started with our falling in love with one little puppy, then she grew, and then we wanted more. It was a fun and crazy time for us. For sure, no one was bored at home. We didn't have computers and cellphones then for 'toys'. We were kept on our toes, occupied and happy by our furry, barking and playful 'children'. They kept us fit with all the running around we did in our big yard. Thank God for our hired staff who helped us manage our kennel, from feeding, clean-up, bathing, and disciplining. Still. we had our share of little 'accidents', like teething pups who knew no better, and chewed on our pricey carpet, leather shoes and wallets! We pampered our 'brood', making sure they had the best of care. When anyone got sick, we took it hard and worried, like parents. We could have well hired a full time vet just to give them their regular check-ups and shots.

If you love dogs, i think you will be amused with some of these doggone quotes...

"You can say any fool thing to a dog, and the dog will give you this look that says, `My God, you're RIGHT! I NEVER would've thought of that!' - Dave Barry·

"If you are a dog and your owner suggests that you wear a sweater. . . suggest that he wear a tail." - Fran Lebowitz

"Whoever said you can't buy happiness forgot little puppies." - Gene Hill

"In order to really enjoy a dog, one doesn't merely try to train him to be semihuman. The point of it is to open oneself to the possibility of becoming partly dog." - Edward Hoagland

"Dogs are our link to paradise. They don't know evil or jealousy or discontent. To sit with a dog on a hillside on a glorious afternoon is to be back in Eden, where doing nothing was not boring--it was peace." - Milan Kundera

"When you feel dog tired at night, it may be because you've growled all day long." - Unknown

"I think we are drawn to dogs because they are the uninhibited creatures we might be if we weren't certain we knew better." - George Bird Evans

"If dogs could talk it would take a lot of the fun out of owning one." - Andy Rooney

"They [dogs] never talk about themselves but listen to you while you talk about yourself, and keep up an appearance of being interested in the conversation." - Jerome K. Jerome

"You may have a dog that won't sit up, roll over or even cook breakfast, not because she's too stupid to learn how but because she's too smart to bother." - Rick Horowitz

"To err is human, to forgive, canine." - Unknown

·"Do not make the mistake of treating your dogs like humans or they will treat you like dogs." - Martha Scott

"Dogs feel very strongly that they should always go with you in the car, in case the need should arise for them to bark violently at nothing right in your ear." - Dave Barry

"The dog was created especially for children. He is the god of frolic." - Henry Ward Beecher

"When a dog runs at you, whistle for him." - Henry David Thoreau

·"Some days you're the dog, some days you're the hydrant." - Unknown

"Barking dogs don't bite people they don't know." - Unknown

I also grew up with dogs and have had many through the years. We now have our two cats, Dusty and Peaches, and my mother's dog Skippy...all of which have their own hubs. We actually have a pillow on our bed with one of the quotes in your hub........"To err is human, to forgive, canine." Enjoyed seeing your lovely companions.

You do pick unusual names. It shows that you love dogs and that's great. Your yellow Lab reminds me of one I had - a genuine sweetheart, she was: Ginger. Thanks for hub here!

Three days after Christmas, my sister and her husband lost their Rottweiler named Dozer. He always was so friendly whenever I came by to visit, always wanted a bit of TLC. I became saddened when I heard the news as I've known him since he was a puppy. Rest in Peace, Dozer. This hub reminded me of him, so for that, I thank you for sharing this with all of us.

Hello: My husband actually asked why i wrote this one, haha!

Princess Joy, i like the name. I can actually write a whole book on our dog zoo days and people's experiences with us. Thanks for reminding me of some fond memories.

HPR, I'm going through some old photos to feature here, meantime, had to 'grab' a few.

BK!To be partly doggie is to be lovable, or as my 5 yr old granddaughter would say "Adorable!". Arf arf! That's thanks and much love, hahaha

Well these are great! - and as you said -profound. Lots of food for thought. And good advice - don't try to make your dog semi-human, as so many do - instead be partly doggie, sounds like fun!

I love a good quote - thank you!

a very interesting real story! i remember when i went to your house at Ayala Alabang, you have a big dog and small one, am really scared of them, kc mas malaki pa sya sa akin hahahaha...i always asked daisy to accompany way out to the gate kc takot ako talaga...and then you have small dog, he used to bark at me, and wants to play but am really scared...but they are all friendly and sweet dogs. palagi ako nakadikit syo mam, kaya parte na rin ako ng buhay mo, thanks SVV, love you!
