From the parrot's beak: 9/13 edition
- Singing the Blus: Presley the Spix's macaw, said to be the inspiration for Blu in the "Rio" movies, died last week. The species is almost certainly extinct in the wild, and 40 year old Presley's death leaves somewhat more than 100 Spix's left in captivity, according to Lew "Buddy" Waskey. Deforestation, wildlife trafficking and the introduction of African honeybees which compete for next space are fingered as the main culprits in the species' decline. Director Carlos Saldanha of the two "Rio" movies said he hoped the movie would raise awareness of endangered birds in Brazil. "The Spix's macaw truly is the rarest," he said in an interview with the Bird Channel website.
- Point/Counterpoint:Fly vs. clip debate: "...most older birds really don't want to learn to fly so they are not 'missing' what you think they are missing. I have had over 100 birds given to me, most of which lived in a 3000 sq ft aviary I built for them. Only about 20 want to fly," says Chris Niro, Executive Director of Bird Recovery International at the Pirate's Parrot Show. The comment generated some support, but a lot of dissenting views as well, proving yet again that parrot fanciers are not monolithic in their views. On the opposing side: "There is no natural enrichment that can compare with it. I am extremely passionate about helping those who want to keep the birds in their care flighted. I used to clip my birds' wings. I no longer do but I understand people do what they need to do in their individual situations," says Lara Joseph, President/founder of the Animal Behavior Center.

- Stolen: Six-month-old African grey 'Zephyr' from Omar’s Exotic Birds in Brea, CA. Still hand-fed, could die. At the store, young parrots are put out on hanging play stands where they can interact with customers. Thieves took apparently advantage of this, as seen on surveillance video. One had the bird on his arm, and it looks like his partner caused a distraction. -- Found: African grey parrot in Neptune, NJ now at Associated Humane Society 2960 Shafto Rd Tinton Falls.
