From the parrot's beak: bad habits edition
- No show bird shows: flu fallout:There will be no birds for sale or display at Peninsula Cage Bird Society's 9/19 Fall Festival and Bird Mart. Although the Virginia Department of Agriculture has not enacted any restrictions, club directors voted to take a cautious approach "due to recent bird flu concerns." Guest speaker Lewis "Buddy" Waskey from Freeflight will be showing a video.The club hopes flu concerns will ease and live birds will return for their spring show. Greater Charlotte Cage Bird Society's expo, previously scheduled for the same date, is cancelled. The veterinarian division of the NC Dept of Agriculture is putting the kibosh on bird gatherings in NC from 8/15 through 1/16.
- Hooker not happy about hookbills: Heidi Fleiss, the one time notorious "Hollywood Madam" owns some 20 macaws and was even featured with them on an "Animal Planet" special. The birds were formerly showcased at Las Vegas' Tropicana Hotel. Now, citing the birds' typical long lives; she is pushing for a ban on ownership of macaws in Nevada, generating consternation among many parrot owners; along with a few snarky comments.
- Polly-tical quote o' the week: "What is he, a parrot?" - "Hardball"'s Chris Matthews, commenting on Donald Trump's statement: "When I drink my little wine... and have my little cracker, I guess that is a form of asking for forgiveness."

- High class hookbills: The theme was supposed to be charades but lovebirds Tony and Carmela (named after "Sopranos" characters) and the oxygen tent that covered their cage were a hot topic of conversation at a posh Hamptons, NY party. Alan Alda and Joy Behar were among thirty guests of Jerry Della Femina and Judy Licht. Although the 16 year old ailing Tony rallied for a few days, he eventually succumbed. "We're getting another lovebird for the widow," said the grief stricken Della Femina.

- Four parakeets rescued along with fifteen dogs from a one-bedroom apartment in Lawrence. MA are up for adoption, says MSPCA-Angell. Typically he Nevins Farm shelter's bird room houses 20 birds this time of year but with recent large surrenders it's bursting at the seams with 49 birds. “For anyone considering a winged pet now is the time to adopt,” said director Mike Keiley. “So many people believe you have to go to the pet store to buy a parakeet, but in fact you can go to your local shelter and adopt one.”

- Parrot peeps in the news: South Bay Bird Society of southern California honors Laney Rickman, founder of the Bird Endowment, on 8/3 for 20+ years as (the only) conservation breeder of blue throated macaws in the USA.-- World Bird Sanctuary has announced the passing last week of Walter C. Crawford Jr. Founder and Executive Director of World Bird Sanctuary unexpectedly following complications from routine surgery.
