Home Remedies for Constipation in Cats #1: Pumpkin

Believe it or not, pumpkin proves to be relatively effective in treating constipation in cats. Like humans, cats can use fiber to help regulate their system. All you have to do is mix two tablespoons of pumpkin in with their food. You may need to repeat this process for a couple of days to successfully reduce your cat’s constipation.

Home Remedies for Constipation in Cats #2: Water

Cats tend to drink quite a bit of water, but may stop doing so if he or she becomes constipated. In order to provide your cat with the water that is needed you may need to switch to canned cat food for a couple of days. Not only will your cat appreciate the treat, but canned cat food has a lot more moisture than your typical bagged cat food, making the digestion process much easier.

Home Remedies for Constipation in Cats #3: Hair

Cats with very long hair have an increased likelihood of becoming constipated due to hairballs obtained during the grooming process. Furthermore, these long-haired cats also have more hair near the anus and may add to the constipation problem. Therefore, you may wish to give you cat a nice trim, especially around the anus in an effort to reduce constipation.

Home Remedies for Constipation in Cats #4: Milk

Another way to help your cat move through the constipation cycle is giving it a cup of milk a day. The cup of milk can be administered all at once or you can give half a cup in the morning and the rest at night. Milk tends to cause diarrhea in cats; however, it may be very successful in reducing the constipation. Be sure to discontinue the use of milk as soon as your cat resumes normal digestion.

If your cat is constipated it is very important that you act quickly to help alleviate the problems. By leaving constipation problems untreated, your cat can develop megacolon in which your cat’s colon enlarges; this condition is chronic and can lead to a full blockage.

Home remedies for constipation in cats can definitely assist with getting your beloved pet on the road to recovery. However, if symptoms persist it is important that you take your cat to a veterinary clinic to ensure other, more serious problems are not the cause of the constipation.

Thanks for the hub. My 23 y/o cat just had thyroid surgery and is not drinking. However, she eats canned food and I have hoped she is getting enough water for now with the gravy form the food. And she is constipated as well. Maybe it will get better soon as she feels better.
