How To Use Flexwatt Heat Tape For Your Reptile

Updated on September 14, 2011

What is Flexwatt?

Flexwatt is quickly becoming a more popular heat source in the reptile industry. Nearly every rack systems used by hobbyists and big time breeders use Flexwatt. Flexwatt was originally used to heat floors and similar flat surfaces. It is a heating element that has nickel plated copper foil strips. These two nickel plated copper strips conduct electricity equally to the black lines in the tape. This heat tape is very thin compared to typical under tank heaters and is very durable.

Is Flexwatt safe to use?

Flexwatt is a safe product to use IF you used with a thermostat. There have been dangerous incidents that have occurred while Flexwatt was being used. It is agreed that in these cases, the Flexwatt was used improperly. There have been many, many breeders and reptile keepers that have used Flexwatt for many years without any issue at all. There have been very, very few cases of product failure when Flexwatt is used correctly.

How do I use Flexwatt?

First of all, before even plugging in your Flexwatt, invest in a thermostat! With thermostats, you really get what you pay for. Cheaper brands of thermostats can be very prone to not working properly. More expensive thermostats are generally much more reliable. Thermostats can be an expensive investment, but the safety of your animals and your home is worthwhile.

After you purchase a reliable thermostat, you can begin setting up your Flexwatt. I recommend that if you are purchasing Flexwatt for the first time, or even if you are a seasoned pro with it, visit Reptile Basics. They not only provide all sizes of Flexwatt but will even cut it to the size you need and wire it for you. This is a service not many provide, and one of the main reason I order from them. I will have all important contact information below.

Reptile Basics

I, along with many experienced keepers, are quite happy with the service Reptile Basics provide. I'm mentioning this company because of their great prices and products, as well as the fact that they can send you Flexwatt that is ready to go! This is perfect for someone new to using Flexwatt. You won't have to worry about wiring or anything of the sort. All you need to worry about is finding a great thermostat (which they sell!).
