How to Protect Your Dog from the Summer Heat

Updated on July 20, 2010

The dog is man's best friend, so it only makes sense that we would want to take care of our four legged friends. Depending on the size and type of dog you own, you can have problems in the summer, keeping your dog cool. Even short haired dogs have trouble staying cool in the summer heat. Dogs are not so different than people, in that they need to keep hydrated and out of the sun and they need to be protected from the summer heat that can get the best out of us.

Dogs have their sweat glands located in their mouths, thus the panting. For some breeds of dog, when they get too hot, their tongue swells up and can be detrimental to their health. So it makes sense that they would need plenty of fresh, cool water to keep them hydrated and cooled off. Keep lots of water for them to easily find to cool themselves down. Ideally a nice swim in water will satisfy and please your pup. On walks and outings, be sure to pack extra water for Fido and make stops that include letting him sit, drink and cool down. Dogs can become dehydrated just as quickly as people, so water is a much needed supply to pack.

How can you keep your dog cool when they have so much fur? For some, it is like they are wearing a jacket all year long. Some breeds carry a thick coat and can not seem to get cool no matter what they do. For these types, to take your dog for a grooming and trim can keep them much more comfortable and cooler, with less fur to deal with. Sometimes a good brushing will amazingly get rid of quite a bit of fur, hidden in their coat. Provide them with shade or a cooler place to laze about, maybe indoors, in the air-conditioning.

Keeping your dog healthy is a priority for any dog owner. Keep your precious pet cooled down and give him options so that he can cool him self off in the hot hazy summer days. Dogs offer us people a multitude of joy, entertainment and can even lower our blood pressure, so why not keep your furry friends looked after? Offer plenty of water, shade, and well groomed or cut short for him and he will be sure to love you forever.
