Jesus Christ Lizard

Updated on February 15, 2011

The Jesus Christ Lizard (also known as the basilisk) is a strange animal that can be found in Central and South American rainforests.Their nickame derives from the fact that these animals have the ability to run  on the surface of water. They do so, when their life is threatened and it is a very effective way of avoiding danger. When the basilisk runs, its hind legs are in an erect position, holding its arms to its sides. They do not sink water because their feet are large and equipped with flaps of skin along the toes. When running they achieve an average speed of 8.4 km/h ( 5.2 miles per hour), which is almost equal to the speed they achieve on land.
Basilisks stay near rivers and streams. Adult basilisks can grow up to two and a half feet long(about 0,7 metres). Basilisks are omnivore animals mainly feedingon insects, flowers and small vertebrates like snakes, birds, eggs and fish.

The Jesus Christ Lizard has a lot of natural enemie, including birds, mammals and reptiles. However its one of a kind "running on water" ability helps it a lot to survive. Check the video below and be amazed by this extraordinary animal:
