Aquatasy - Glass or Acrylic? - A Guide to Choosing Your Next Aquarium

Expensive Or Cheap?

Buying an aquarium or a fish tank is a major cost in keeping fish. The cost of fish feed or even the maintenance of fish is comparatively much less.

If you do not wish to spend much on a fish tank you can go in for a medium sized tank and also buy fish breeds that are cheaper.

How To Have A Clean Fish Tank

Water Considerations

Keeping the aquarium clean is a must but don't go overboard and replace the entire water when cleaning the fish tank. Replacing the water completely can be spell death for the fish.

Your aquarium has a filter so once a month you can take out half the water and replace it with fresh water.

If you are keeping fish in a pot you can replace 10-20% of the old water with fresh water everyday.

Small Tank - More Work

In a very small fish tank or fish pot, fitting a filter, a heater is not possible and therefore one needs to be more vigilant and observant of the fish.

In a normal sized aquarium maintenance of fish is easier. Therefore, when buying an aquarium or fish tank keep this in mind.

Points To Keep In Mind

  • Different sizes of tube lights and colored bulbs are available to brighten and light up the different sizes of aquarium available.
  • Keep a thermocole sheet below the fish tank to support the glass base of the tank.
  • Some fish have a fierce temper, yes they do. Hence, do not keep these fish along with other different fish. Always consult an expert about which fish breeds are compatible and stick to it.

Cleaning the fish tank is a big chore. I, too, gave up on keeping fish recently as my last fish died when I had to leave it with a neighbor since I had to attend a wedding out of state and had to leave the house locked.

I used to have a couple of aquariums and did enjoy watching the fish. I particularly liked watching the types of fish like neon tetras who schooled back and forth in unison. I finally gave it up due to the chore of cleaning the tanks. Now I just appreciate other people's aquariums when I get to view them.

@Shaloo, the death of a pet affects all of us, more intensely, a child. There are a few things that need to be kept in mind when fish are kept, as being small, they are very sensitive to even little changes.

@Diana, a smaller tank is always easily manageable. I am sorry to learn you bumped into a few problems and had to stop keeping fish.

Good information. It's been years since I have had fish tanks to care for, but I enjoyed watching them very much. I did get overwhelmed by trying to keep the tanks clean when I ran into a problem with filter system not working right. I ended up giving the last few fish I had away and tearing down the thirty gallon tank. Perhaps I will set up a smaller tank in the future and start all over again.

I used to have an aquarium for years but eventually I discarded it. My son used to get very sad whenever a fish died. I think we were doing something wrong because the fish used to die quite often especially when we changed the water. Once we got a wrong pair of fish who ate the smaller ones and we realized it only when the number was considerably reduced.

@MsDora, these pet fish are very sensitive to over feeding. They just need a few grains of fish feed at a time. I feel that was the reason for its death. I have passed through this phase earlier on when I had just started to keep them. Other than that they hardly need any care.

      @sukhneet, so very true!

Exactly Mr. Jolly. Their love is unconditional and they never demand anything in return for that love. That is commendable about them.

My neighbor asked me to feed her fish while she was on vacation. I swear I didn't kill it, but it died. Thanks for the instructions, but I'm still not ready to feed or own a fish.

@Bill, keeping fish as pets does not take too much of one's time and effort. Time is one thing that is always in short supply, and being as busy as you are with your writing, I agree with you.

Thanks for always sparing time to read my hubs. Have a great day.

@Flourish, cats certainly have an affinity for fish. I've seen cats making a ruckus whenever we had fish being cooked at home. Thank you for visiting.

@sukhneet, I have a medium sized aquarium and its so soothing to see these colorful fish swimming. They are no demand pets and this is what I like best about them.

I like aquariums a lot, though, I don't have one at my home. I feel that these colorful little creatures look awesome and are the symbols of peace. So fresh, clean and serene in their approach.

I have read somewhere that pets in house creates positive ambience and everyone should have them in their houses.

I've had fish previously and have always wanted a koi pond. My cats would love the entertainment of watching them swim back and forth. I'd worry about things when I wasn't there to monitor things, however.

I have a tendency to want to do more and more and more with a hobby like this, and I'm afraid that once I started with fish it would become an obsession...and I only have time for one obsession...writing!

      But great information, my friend!
